Robert Craig Wine Cellars Howell Mountain 2003
|
Full ruby-red. Subdued nose hints at black fruits, mint and tobacco leaf.Pungent but a bit peppery in the mouth, with flavors of red berries, flowers, herbs, milk chocolate, iron and tobacco.Slightly edgy acids contribute to an impression of tartness. Finishes with drying tannins and a repeating peppery quality.

Evident oak and a bit of rooty spice tend to overshadow defined fruit in the somewhat tight but solidly varietal aromas here, yet the wine's tentative flavors are not so much 'tight' as they are seemingly limited in fruity supply. There is a nice sensation of ripe currants on entry, but the wine shortens up on the palate and, in the end, is simply less complete than its well-endowed mate from Mount Veeder.
