Neyers Vineyards Contra Costa County Pato Vineyard 2004
|
Good full ruby. Black fruits, menthol and a meaty nuance on the nose. Juicy and bright, with sound acids giving shape and grip to the old-viney berry and spice flavors. Finishes vinous and long, with sweet but firm tannins and lingering suggestions of Christmas spices.

Aromas of pepper, juniper berry, beef and leather are taut and sharp on the palate, with the acidity and tannins sticking out. Lacks harmony. Drink now. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 1,988 cases made.

Contra Costa County Zinfandels tend to be heavy and skewed to chocolaty ripeness, yet this wine, while never less than fully ripe, offers up a convincing dose of genuine fruit and comes up a winner. It is full on the palate, plump and pleasantly rounded in feel, and it keeps its alcohols fairly well-hidden. Its last-minute tannins signal the potential for a few years of keeping, but it is thoroughly enjoyable now.
