Grgich Hills Cellar Napa Valley Fume 2006
|
The 2006 Fume Blanc is an outstanding example of Sauvignon, with notes of mineral, melon, white citrus, grapefruit, and honey. The finish is long, and the wine has outstanding purity.
Most of the vineyards at Grgich Hills are now biodynamically farmed, and perhaps that shows in the extra minerality and intensity some of these cuvees possess.

Light yellow-gold. Peach, thyme, sage and nutty, vanillin oak on the nose. Dense and rich but juicy, with good breadth and weight to the flavors of ripe lemon, melon and peach. A tactile, nicely concentrated wine with a spicy, slightly oily finish. This should be served with food.

Here is a big, potent Fume that is rife with both very deep fruit and loads of varietal herbs, and its generous mix of melons and grass is framed with very evident oak. Full and close to oily in feel, it has the weight and richness of Chardonnay but is solidly and unmistakably Sauvignon Blanc from beginning to end. There will no doubt be those who think it too much of a good thing, but it will never be accused of timidity, and it will stand up to appropriately full-flavored foods. And, for those with a yearning for older Sauvignon Blancs, the Grgich bottlings have frequently exhibited incredible staying power.
