Burgess’s Merlots tend to vary in quality, and this is not one of the better ones. It’s a soft, dry wine with a rustic mouthfeel, and some bitterness to the finish. The dominant flavors are of cherries and espresso.

It will win no accolades for power and punch, but this balanced wine is fruity and well-focused in an open and minimally tannic style. It comes up a touch short and dry at the finish, and we do not recommend that it be held for more than a couple of years, but it will provide pleasant drinking in the here and now with milder meat entrees.
