Spottswoode Estate Vineyard & Winery Napa Valley 1984
The Spottwoode style, with its bright acids always in view, can sometimes result in older wines that are narrow and brittle. Not so here because this lovely is endowed with deep, continuing fruit that not only is convincing in its own right but has acquired a level of layered complexity that maintains the wine's ranking at the very top of the table. Sweet cassis and creamy oak is blended with light notes of olives, rich loam and hints of minerals in flavors that are buttressed by the winery-typical acids, and the sum of these delectable parts add up to a wine that is ready to drink now yet can hold up well in bottle for another decade. Three stars when first reviewed.

A beautifully proportioned wine with flavor, elegance and finesse although it a bit closed now. The cassis, cherry and tobacco flavors are tightly woven together and it backed by gutsy, yet smooth, tannins. Give it some time.
