Philip Togni Vineyard Spring Mountain Napa Valley Estate Bottled 2000

Medium ruby-red, less saturated than the 2001. Slightly medicinal yet warm aromas of black cherry, roast coffee, mocha, smoke and truffle. Smooth, sweet and smoky in the mouth, but with less stuffing and flavor development in the middle than the 2001. With a bit less material here, one is more aware of the wine's acids and slightly drying tannins. Togni described the 2000 vintage as 'adequate but not distinguished, with a bit of rain during the harvest.' He compared the stronger 2001 to the superb 1991 vintage.

Estate Bottled. There is little in the way of immediate fruit to be found in the tight and somewhat brooding aromas of this very backward young Cabernet, and its tight, acid-firmed, tannin-framed flavors are presently hard as nails. While Togni's wines are never the pictures of prettiness in the youth, this one fails to show the fruity strength and inner extract that might otherwise predict a happy future.
