3rd Pio Cesare
Pio Cesare
Barolo   Nebbiolo
WS91
Sweet and spicy, displaying a viscous texture that envelops the cherry, menthol and allspice notes. Firm, upright tannins on the finish keep this honest, and the spice lingers, along with notes of mineral. Needs time. Best from 2013 through 2030. 2,630 cases imported. –BS

2006 $64.99
3rd Proprieta Sperino Uvaggio
Proprieta Sperino Uvaggio
Coste della Sesia Rosso Nebbiolo
The 2004 Uvaggio is composed of 75% nebbiolo (referred to in the local dialect as Spanna) with the remainder being vespolina and croatina. Uvaggio means a blend of grapes or what we in California would call a field blend (as opposed to the vinaggio which is a blend of finished wines). The 2004 Proprietà Sperino Uvaggio shows what careful grape selection, exacting vinification and moderate use of wood can produce. The wine is deeply colored with a lovely spicy scent. It is medium bodied and slightly firm now with characteristic nebbiolo flavors like rose petals and tar as well as substantial tannins and the typical nebbiolo mysteriousness. This wine will go well with all manner of roast and grilled meat as well as hard cheeses. This wine will continue to improve for many years.

2004 $34.99
3rd Allegrini
Allegrini
Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Corvina, Rondinella, Molinara
WS93
An interesting melange of currant, prune, flowers and hints of cardamom on the nose follow through to a full body, where the fruit turns to fresh black currant, coating the firm tannins and giving a long, fresh finish of fruit and mineral. Superfresh and well-structured. Delicious now, but best to wait. Best after 2010. 12,000 cases made. –JC

Collectible
2004 $106.99
3rd Kurni
Kurni
Oasi degli Angeli IGT Sangiovese
WA90
The 2005 Kurni (Montepulciano) is full-bodied, sweet and Amarone-like in its expression of sumptuous dark fruit, smoke, earthiness, black cherries, blackberries and spices. Made in a lush, rich style, it offers superb density and length, even if the tannins clamp down somewhat on the finish, as the wine doesn’t quite have enough fruit to match its structure. Still, it is a compelling effort. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2015.

2005 $128.99
4th Fattoria Le Pupille
Fattoria Le Pupille
  Toscana Saffredi Cabernet Sauvignon

Reminiscent of the 1999. Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. Best after 2012. 1,800 cases made. –JS

2006 $73.99
10th Fattoria di Felsina
Fattoria di Felsina
Fontalloro Rosso Sangiovese Sangiovese
ST96
"Good full red with a palish rim. Pure, superripe aromas of red cherry, violet, iodine and nutmeg. Superrich, highly concentrated and seamless, with densely packed flavors of raspberry, dark plum and marzipan. Finishes creamy-rich and explosively long, with a pretty violet note. This was so good I really had trouble letting the glass go. I''d wait a good five years on this one, then enjoy it for another two decades. Proof positive that sangiovese is one of the world''s great grape varieties."

2004 $58.99
11th Pio Cesare
Pio Cesare
Ornato   Nebbiolo
WS94
Very beautiful aromas of berry, tar and rose follow through to a full-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a long finish of berry and vanilla. Very, very impressive. Polished and structured. Best after 2010. 1,000 cases made.

2003 $112.99
12th La Gerla
La Gerla
Brunello di Montalcino   Sangiovese Grosso
This floral- and cherry-scented red is elegant and supple, picking up a tobacco note on the palate. Moderate tannins emerge on the finish, where a spicy accent lingers. Best from 2013 through 2024. 3,000 cases made.

2006 $54.99
12th Piancornello
Piancornello
Brunello di Montalcino   Sangiovese
WA93
The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino is a huge, dark wine that saturates the palate with black cherries, licorice, new leather and French oak. Despite the extroverted style, this shows gorgeous delineation in its aromatics and plenty of vibrancy. Warm mocha and chocolate overtones add complexity on the finish. This is one of the more full-throttle wines of the vintage, and the extroverted personality of the wines from this part of the zone is quite evident, but all of the elements come together beautifully. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024." (05/11)

2006 $47.99
12th Casanova di Neri
Casanova di Neri
Brunello di Montalcino   Brunello
WA93
The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino is fabulous in this vintage. Waves of dark fruit caress the palate as this juicy, delicious wine reveals its considerable charms. The fruit shows lovely weight and richness while maintaining an essentially mid-weight personality. Sweet scents of French oak linger on the round, caressing, impeccable finish. This is an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next decade-plus. The harvest took place from the 2nd to the 5th of October. The wine spent 24 days on the skins, after which it was racked into cask, where it spent 45 months prior to being bottled. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.

2006 $45.99
12th Pio Cesare
Pio Cesare
Barolo   Nebbiolo
WS94
Very pretty plum and fresh flower aromas follow through to a full-bodied palate, with velvety tannins and a long, long finish. Layered and serious. Very close to the fabulous 1997. Best after 2009. 7,000 cases made.

2001 $89.99
12th Montevetrano
Montevetrano
Colli di Salerno IGT Cabernet Sauvignon
WA95
The 2004 Montevetrano is a knock-out. Endless layers of richly textured dark fruit flows from the glass as this gorgeous wine gradually reveals the depth of its expression. Tar, smoke, menthol, eucalyptus and earthiness emerge with air, adding further complexity as the wine sits in the glass. Gorgeously long and pure - with a finish that lasts forever- this sumptuous wine is not to be missed. Montevetrano is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 10% Aglianico. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2024.

2004 $94.99
