Zinfandel

The origins of this tremendously versatile and popular grape are not known for certain, although it is thought to have come from Southern Italy as a cousin of Primitivo. It is the most widely planted red grape in California (though Australia has also played around with the grape). Much of it is vinified into white Zinfandel, a blush-colored, slightly sweet wine. Real Zinfandel, the red wine, is the quintessential California wine. It has been used for blending with other grapes, including Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah. It has been made in a claret style, with berry and cherry flavors, mild tannins and pretty oak shadings. It has been made into a full-bodied, ultraripe, intensely flavored and firmly tannic wine designed to age. And it has been made into late-harvest and Port-style wines that feature very ripe, raisiny flavors, alcohol above 15 percent and chewy tannins.

Varietally distinct, this Zinfandel captures the true essence of Alexander Valley. The fruit is sourced from a variety of vineyards with differing microclimates. This provides the winery with an array of unique parcels of fruit. Once vinified, these parcels are blended together and then allowed to mature in French and American oak for 10 months. Further complexity is achieved by the addition of small amounts of Sangiovese and Syrah.

Fragrant floral notes of black fruit, spice and black pepper set the stage for this lush old vine Zinfandel. Extremely rich and well structured with more exotic fruit characteristics than most Zinfandels, the wine’s profile is centered on a core of ripe blackberry and boysenberry with notes of cherry kirsch, clove and pepper. The extremely approachable finish displays dense layers of boysenberry jam and cocoa powder.

Small amounts of petite sirah and alicante bouschet add texture and color to the field blend and the winery chooses to hand-harvest late into the season when some of the berries have raisined, intensifying the wine's character. Aged for 14 months in new American oak, this is a plump zin with layers of black cherry, raspberry and black pepper that will keep you intrigued to the bottom of the bottle.
