Merlot

Merlot

The Merlot grape is a red wine grape that is used as a blending grape and for wines that use different varieties of grapes. A Merlot-based wine has a medium body with hints of current, plum and berry. Merlot blends well with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes for variety wines. The Merlot grape has been a popular favorite in the US and in Chile, as well as throughout the world for making wine because of its flexibility and unique flavor.

Deep garnet with glossy highlights .Slightly peppery with scents of soft fruit such as blackcurrant and raspberry. Merlot is predominant and marked by an honest attack that is well rounded and full. A supple wine, with a soft tannic structure, well balanced and not overpowered by wood. A very well balanced and elegant wine with an extensive lingering finish.

6 Chateau Beau-Sejour-Becot
Chateau Beau-Sejour-Becot
Becot St-emilion Merlot Cabernet Franc
WA93
From a 41-acre vineyard situated on St.-Emilion’s limestone plateau, Beau-Sejour-Becot’s blend can vary, but it is approximately 70% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. Production can be as low as 4,000+ cases (in a tiny vintage such as 2003), or as high as 7,000+ cases (in an abundant year such as 2004). The 2003, which reminds me of a 1990 Right Bank Bordeaux, tips the scales at 13.5% alcohol. Its dark plum/ruby/purple color is followed by a sweet nose of creosote, scorched earth, black cherries, currants, and pain grille. Deep, full-flavored, muscular, textured, and rich with light to moderate tannin in the finish, this lavishly rich, full-bodied effort requires 1-3 years of bottle age, and should drink well over the following 12-15.

2003 $69.99
7 Chateau Petit Village

2005 $79.99
9 Chateau Smith-Haut Lafitte
Chateau Smith-Haut Lafitte
  Pessac Leognan Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon
WA95
One can’t say enough about the accomplishments the Cathiards have achieved at this property since 1990. Prior to their purchase of the property, appallingly diluted, vegetal, fruitless, charmless wines were produced, but they have turned Smith-Haut-Lafitte into a showcase Pessac-Leognan. The inky/blue/purple-tinged 2005''s extraordinary nose reeks of charcoal, incense, scorched earth, abundant blackberry, blueberry, and cherry fruit, toast, and spice. Good acidity, huge but sweet tannin, and fabulous precision as well as definition characterize this full-bodied, super-concentrated effort. It should prove to be among the longest-lived wines yet made by the Cathiards. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030+.

2005 $89.99
10 Chateau Leoville Barton
Chateau Leoville Barton
Saint Julien   Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon
WS96
Another prodigious, but brutally tannic, offering from the affable Anthony Barton, the inky/blue/black-hued 2005 Leoville Barton exhibits a sensational perfume of charcoal, burning embers, underbrush, cedar, creme de cassis, and subtle toasty oak. Painfully concentrated (much like the 2000 was at the same stage), with full body, admirable purity, and several boatloads of muscular tannin, this St.-Julien is built for 50-60 years of cellaring. Its purity and precision are typical of today’s winemaking, but Barton is certainly not making a wine for near-term gratification. This is another 2005 that will require enormous patience. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2065.

2005 $149.99
11
Chateau Magrez Fombrauge
Saint Emilion   Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon
WS93
Good bright medium ruby. Very primary, reduced aromas of black cherry and new oak. Dense, sweet and full, with powerful fruit and excellent breadth. Very thick and concentrated wine, with liqueur-like dark berry and bitter chocolate flavors given shape by sound acidity. Finishes with substantial, slightly gritty tannins that build with aeration. Denser and more opulent than the regular Fombrauge cuvee but today the regular wine comes across as sweeter and less worked. This has stronger material for aging, though.

2005 $249.99
