Merlot

Merlot

The Merlot grape is a red wine grape that is used as a blending grape and for wines that use different varieties of grapes. A Merlot-based wine has a medium body with hints of current, plum and berry. Merlot blends well with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes for variety wines. The Merlot grape has been a popular favorite in the US and in Chile, as well as throughout the world for making wine because of its flexibility and unique flavor.

1 Bogle
Bogle
California   Merlot
WS84
Developed and intense fruit from this harvest has produced one of our most full-bodied merlots yet! Deep cherry fruit hits both the nose and palate upon the first sip, followed by soft hints of summer anise. Touches of pipe tobacco and spicy oak lend weight to the finish, trailed by firm, assertive tannins. Enjoy this wine with a wide range of food: from pasta to hearty meat dishes, or of course, all by itself!

2009 $11.98

Frei Brothers
Dry Creek Valley   Merlot
BH84
6% Cabernet Sauvignon; 3% Zinfandel. From its candied, red-cherry aromas to its very simple, mildly fruity flavors, this clean but innocuous wine is very much the minimalist with respect to richness or real substance. While its tannins are minor, they are noticeable in light of the wine's fundamental shortage of real stuffing and strength.

2004 $14.99
3 Domaine Chandon
Domaine Chandon
Napa-Sonoma County Cuvee Brut Merlot
WS85
A good example of a mature sparkler, that has nutty and caramel flavors. The doughy character, with its yeasty finish, is attractive, but don't hold on to this, drink it now. Tasted in magnum.

$16.99
4 Robert Mondavi
Robert Mondavi
Napa Valley Merlot Merlot
ST89
Tight and focused, with blackberry and toasty oak aromas and concentrated black currant and espresso flavors that finish with steely tannins. Drink now through 2013. 40,000 cases made. –TF

2007 $18.99
5 Cloverdale Ranch
Cloverdale Ranch
Alexander Valley   Merlot
Ripe-cherry fruit is given a sweetening lift by lots of vanillin oak first in the nose and then in the flavors of this supple, mid-sized Merlot, and, while not especially complex or highly extracted, it is mannerly and varietally true from front to back. It can take a few years of age but in no way demands it, and it will drink well in the near term with lighter lamb dishes and lightly seasoned, simply grilled steaks." (07/08)

2005 $21.99
6 Chateau Souverain
Chateau Souverain
Alexander Valley   Merlot
WS89
Sleek and well-structured, with red currant and spice aromas and appealing black cherry, toasty sage and espresso flavors. The tannins firm up the finish. Drink now through 2014. 19,000 cases made. –TF

2007 $21.99
7 Burgess Cellars
Burgess Cellars
Napa Valley   Merlot
WS88
An understated style, with rich, well-proportioned, loamy currant, herb, tea, tar and berry flavors supported by ripe, integrated tannins. Drink now through 2010. 6,000 cases made.

2003 $21.99

Rutherford Grove
Napa Valley   Merlot
WS86
Wisps of evergreen add to a slight leanness in the cherryish fruit of this wine, and even though it carries suggestions of richness in its somewhat fleshy entry texture, it never acquires the depth or juicy center of complete Merlot. Its finish runs to an edge of greenness and is somewhat pinched.

2001 $21.99
9
Silverado Vineyards
Napa Valley   Merlot
BH84
10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Smelling of ripeness but not of fruit, this big too stolid offering relies on dried plum notes and quiet hints of dark chocolate for character in both nose and mouth. Its finish, however, is tight and dry, and, overall, the wine delivers more structure than center.

2003 $23.99
10 Burgess Cellars
Burgess Cellars
Napa Valley   Merlot
ST90
Reserved, dusty aromas of black fruit, coffee bean and clove with touches of smoke and coconut. Gritty flavors of plum, black cherry, minerals, bittersweet chocolate and iodine are more expressive than suggested by the nose. Silky close.

2004 $23.99
11
Robert Keenan Winery
Napa Valley   Merlot
BH85
Cherries, a touch of candy and whiffs of both orange-rind and herbs lend the aromas of this bottling a distinct varietal bent, but the wine's dull, slightly dry flavors find neither a commensurate measure of fruit nor positive richness, and they end on a note of mildly tannic austerity.

2003 $29.99
12 Swanson
Swanson
Napa Valley Oakville Merlot
BH91
This red is well-focused, with floral red currant and dried sage aromas and firm, tannic flavors of plum, cedar and tomato leaf. Best from 2012 through 2018.

2007 $29.99
13 Provenance Vineyards
Provenance Vineyards
Napa Valley   Merlot
WS89
Focused and Bordeaux-like, with red currant and herb aromas leading to tart, subtly complex black cherry, cedar and spice flavors. Drink now through 2013. 11,400 cases made. –TF

2006 $31.99
14 Stags'' Leap Winery
Stags'' Leap Winery
Napa Valley Merlot Merlot
Merlot vines grow exceptionally in the Bale Loams of Stags’ Leap: alluvial soils with volcanic ash minerality. Underneath the top layer exists a deeper layer of sandy loam laced with gravel and cobbles, allowing the kind of quick and thorough drainage that leaves the vines a little thirsty, concentrating their flavors. Careful vineyard selection, followed by meticulous farming yields a Merlot with rich fruit flavors, full body, and firm structure.

2006 $32.99
15 Trefethen
Trefethen
Merlot Napa Valley Merlot
This Merlot begins with rich savory aromas of cherry, bay leaf, cedar, leather and spice. The weighted mid-palate brings lush flavors of ripe raspberry, smokey molasses, finishing with a lingering hint of black pepper. Rich and layered, this is a balanced wine that will continue to develop.

2009 $35.00

WA89
The dark ruby/purple-colored 2006 Merlot (84% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Cabernet Franc) exhibits fleshy, red and black currant, bay leaf, and underbrush characteristics. Medium-bodied with sweet tannin, it should drink nicely for a decade.
