Pinot Noir USA

Pinot Noir USA

Other than Burgundy, Pinot has been successful in areas like Oregon, California and lately, New Zealand - the Central Otago region to be exact. Pinot Noir from France gives flavors and aromas of red fruit, summer pudding and baking spices. As the wine matures - and great Burgundies are able to do so for years - the flavors become more like the earth the wine comes from- mushrooms, truffles - and the wine gains tremendous complexity. Pinot Noir from the new world like Oregon and California typically exude stronger fruit intensity, some wine able to reach a high level of complexity, structure and age. Others are wonderful for drinking now with a myriad of foods. Many may wax poetic about this grape, the reason being that Pinot Noir produces an amazing contradiction in wine - something so delicate and subtle, yet powerful and mesmerizing.

Vosne-Romanee   Pinot Noir
Supreme elegance! Beautiful colour, with intense and bright reflections. The diversity of the aromas is striking: wild cherry, nutmeg, camphor wood, fine leather...Later on, the wine takes on a subtle aroma of truffle, producing the most varied palette. With its perfect balance between tannin and acidity, the wine has a fleshy, sturdy body. Powerful and long aftertaste. A wealth of harmonious sensations characterizes this great Burgundy."

Deep ruby-red. Cassis, black cherry and menthol on the pure, slightly medicinal nose. Dense, sweet and pure, with lovely delineation and depth to the flavors of dark berries, bitter chocolate and mint. Chewy but pliant. Finishes with firm but ripe tannins and very good length. Classic Howell Mountain cabernet from a ripe year.

Tasted by liquidassets. Great Pinot! I would definitely match this up to a meal... The wine is well balanced despite the high alcohol level that would probably be more noticed if drunk without food to compliment. I let it breathe in a decanter for just over an hour. (94 pts.) - Tasted 11/23/2007.

2004 $79.50

Flax Vineyard Pinot Noir Methode A L'ancienne Pinot Noir
Tasting this Pinot is a sensuous, mouthwatering encounter. From the very beginning, it draws you in deeply, showing an intense focus on dark Bing cherries - a product of its Pommard heritage. Next luscious, savory notes of earthy mushrooms and black tea develop. Another layer unfolds revealing hints of coffee beans, toffee and white pepper. With further exploration, a hint of dogwood adds a surprise twist. The palate is solid with firm tannins and a fine acid balance. This wine is a favorite of chefs and foodies.

2009 $80.99

Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir Pinot Noir
The 2009 Sonoma Coast displays a perfumed delicacy that is immediately appealing, yet belies an underlying richness. Blueberries, fraise du bois and blue violets all effuse from the wine in an ethereal manner. Accents of milk chocolate and creamy wood spices add depth. Disarmingly supple, rich and full with a silky, graceful balance, this Pinot Noir has a sophisticated core of fine-grained tannin and fresh acidity. It will surprise you with its age-worthiness.

Brewer Clifton
Santa Rita Hills Rio Vista Pinot Noir
Born of an obsession with Santa Barbara County terroir, we formed Brewer-Clifton in the early 1990’s. We both had significant sales and production experience with a multitude of Santa Barbara County wineries, and always felt compelled to push the limits of the fruit from the area further than our previous employers had set forth to do. We set out to put the essence of the best vineyards in the area into a bottle. We focus our efforts solely on the production of vineyard designated Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from several carefully selected, extreme vineyards in the Sta. Rita Hills appellation. The area's long growing seasons and diversity of marine-based soils combine to produce dynamic and explosive wines with great purity and precision. Each vineyard site is nurtured identically, allowing the pedigree of place to play the most significant role in our portfolio of wines. In addition to our collective efforts, Steve Clifton also produces wine under his own label, called Palmina, which focuses exclusively on Italian varietals, and is the winemaker at Tritono, an Argentine producer of Malbec. Greg Brewer produces wine under the diatom label, as well as being the winemaker at Melville, a Santa Rita Hills winery dedicated to estate grown Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah. Brewer-Clifton wines are only available in small quantities. Total production averages between 4,000 and 6,500 cases annually.

Tasted by dajapino on 10/11/2006 & rated 94 points: Delicious. Bigger and more complex version of, say, Arlaud "clos de la roche". No heat despitre 15.1% alc. Nose of clove/cinnamon, indian spices, raspberry, cherry, some dark chocolate and tinge of mineral/chalk and barnyard/mushroom. Medium bodied with flavors of cherries, raspberries, and various spices and tinge of earth. Bravo. While I like the BC Melville better, this one's wonderful too.

Sonoma Coast   Pinot Noir

The initial dusty berry and lead pencil shavings are far richer and fruitier on the palate, while still being very taut, backward, intense and concentrated, with potent wild berry and black cherry fruit that's deep and expansive. Needs time. Best from 2008 through 2014. 500 cases made.

2005 $140.00
