Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon

The Cabernet Sauvignon grape is a red grape that is one of the world’s most popularly planted grape varieties. The Cabernet Sauvignon is the principal grape in many Bordeaux wines and this grape is featured in many of the world’s greatest and richest wines. Cabernet Sauvignon wine, at its best, can improve its flavor in the bottle over decades and is still drinkable, and even better, after a century.

Paso Robles Paso Robles Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon

2005 $11.99
2 Avalon Estate
Avalon Estate
Napa Valley   Cabernet Sauvignon
Avalon makes only Cabernet, one dirt cheap wine with a generic 'California' name place, another, well...pretty close to dirt cheap Cab sourced from a variety of Napa Valley appellations. Just Cabernet, so it's lucky for them (and for us) that they handle this favorite grape so very well. The 2005 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is silky and ripe, with layers of cassis fruit and just a smidgen of both oak and tannin. A great Cab to have on hand during summer BBQs!

2005 $16.99

Cartlidge & Browne
California   Cabernet Sauvignon
WE82
The 2005 Cartlidge & Browne Cabernet Sauvignon is the product of some fourteen lots of wine from four growing regions: Lake County (34%), Paso Robles (49%), Sonoma County (11%), and Mendocino County (6%). Winemakers leaned a bit more on the warmer Paso Robles area for ripe fruit character, while Lake and Mendocino Counties provided fine spicy suggestions of tobacco and coffee, and the Sonoma components gave top notes of classic blackcurrant and cherry fruit.

2005 $15.99

Marquis Philips
  S2 McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon
ST87
Ruby-red. Oak-dominated dark berry and kirsch aromas accented by dark chocolate and vanilla. Sweet blueberry and blackcurrant flavors show a liqueur-like aspect, with a strong vanillin oak quality gaining the upper hand on the back. Finishes slightly sticky and sweet, with toasty oak spice and roasted coffee lingering. I'd have guessed this to be a shiraz, or maybe a dessert wine such as Banyuls.

2005 $37.99

Chateau d'Armailhac
Pauillac   Cabernet, Merlot
ST87
Deep ruby-red. Musky aromas of black cherry, espresso, flowers and vanillin oak. Firm and intensely flavored if youthfully lean, with currant and licorice flavors offering very good definition. Finishes juicy and suave, with late-arriving tannins and a note of chocolate.

2006 $37.99
6 Chateau Haut Bages Liberal
Chateau Haut Bages Liberal
Pauillac   Cabernet, Merlot
ST86
Red-ruby. Cool aromas of cherry and licorice. Supple on entry, then rather withdrawn in the middle palate, offering a restrained sweetness. A slightly rustic style, with substantial dusty tannins, but there's good flavor intensity here.

2006 $35.99

Shafer Vineyards
Hillside Select Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon
ST94
Good saturated ruby-red. Superripe aromas of currant, tobacco, coffee, chocolate and maple syrup. Sweet, lush and suave, with a floral aspect; showing the vibrant, juicy quality of the vintage's better examples. Really spreads out to coat the palate. Finishes with big, sweet, broad tannins and a mineral note.

2004 $199.99
8 Beringer Vineyards
Beringer Vineyards
Howell Mountain Rancho del Osos Cabernet Sauvignon
ST91
Deep saturated ruby. Vinous, complex nose combines currant, bitter chocolate, fresh herbs and tobacco. Then sweet, fat, lush and deep, with a surprisingly pliant texture for Howell Mountain cabernet. Very sweet currant, plum, chocolate and spice flavors. Finishes with thoroughly ripe, suave tannins and terrific lingering sweetness. Large-scaled but quite approachable. A superb showing today.

2001 $74.99
9 Pellegrini Winery
Pellegrini Winery
Russian River Valley Eight Cousins Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
ST83
This tight, slightly rigid wine never quite manages to find a sufficient measure of positive fruit to buffer its acidy stiffness and its puckery tannins, and its bothersome smells of earth and dead leaves only serve to diminish its already minimal appeals.

2005 $21.99
10 Snowden Vineyard
Snowden Vineyard
Napa Valley   Cabernet Sauvignon
WS93
Full medium ruby. Slightly porty, high-toned aromas of cassis and currant seed, plus a faint weedy nuance. Fairly concentrated flavors of cassis and menthol, but elevated acidity contributes to the impression of greenness. Somewhat pinched on the back half.

1997 $96.99

Dominus Estate
Napa Valley   Cabernet Sauvignon
ST92
Good ruby-red. Rich, smoky, expressive aromas of plum, currant, licorice, tobacco, game and leather. Suave and lush in the mouth, with explosive flavors of currant and graphite. Quite suave and pliant, offering excellent balance and full, broad, well-buffered tannins. This is just over 14% alcohol. The non-decanted version showed aromas of plum, redcurrant, mocha and nutty oak, and hints of tobacco leaf and licorice in the mouth. Though it was tighter and more firmly tannic, it also showed considerable early complexity. This distinctly claret-like vintage may well merit an even higher score with six to eight years of bottle aging.

2003 $123.99
12 Leeuwin Estate
Leeuwin Estate
Art Series Margaret River   Cabernet Sauvignon
ST92
Deep red. Deep, brooding aromas of creme de cassis, blackberry, bitter chocolate and anise. Quite ripe and dark in character, with flavors of sweet dark berries, roasted coffee, fruitcake and molasses. Finishes quite rich, with dusty tannins. Blackberry and bitter chocolate flavors deepen as the wine opens in the glass.

2003 $40.99
13 Penfolds Wines
Penfolds Wines
Barossa Valley Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon
ST90
Ruby-red. Peppery redcurrant and cherry aromas display impressive cut, with musky black tea and dark chocolate notes adding depth. Youthfully taut red and dark berry flavors are deepened by mocha and licorice, with fine-grained tannins adding gentle support. The long, juicy finish shows a restrained sweetness and hints of pungent herbs.

2004 $21.99

Kendall-Jackson
Alexander Valley Great Estates Cabernet Sauvignon
ST87
Dark red. Aromas of redcurrant, cedar, menthol, tar and tobacco leaf, with a faint weedy quality. Juicy and fruity, with good flavor intensity but a slight greenness. On the lean side, with somewhat drying tannins. A good effort for the vintage.

1998 $32.99

Penley Estate
  Reserve Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon
ST92
Dense ruby. Powerful, deeply scented bouquet of blackberry, cassis, plum compote and dark chocolate; a bit youthfully brooding today. Fat and supple, with concentrated dark berry and cherry flavors and an array of pungent herbs and dusty minerals. There's terrific sweetness and sappy texture here: this is clearly built for positive evolution over the coming decade. Reminds me of a high-end Bordeaux on the sweet, expansive, impressively long finish. Serious stuff!

2004 $42.99
16

The Beringer Founders Estate Cabernet bursts with bright cassis, black fruit and sweet brown spice aromas with just a touch of vanilla that leads into a juicy mouthfeel. A balanced dose of structured tannins and its long finish make this unmistakably a California Cabernet. However, this Cabernet doesn't need to be cellared; it's ready to drink now.
