Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon

The Cabernet Sauvignon grape is a red grape that is one of the world’s most popularly planted grape varieties. The Cabernet Sauvignon is the principal grape in many Bordeaux wines and this grape is featured in many of the world’s greatest and richest wines. Cabernet Sauvignon wine, at its best, can improve its flavor in the bottle over decades and is still drinkable, and even better, after a century.

An amazing percentage of Petit Verdot (39%), combined with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon has resulted in one of the more distinctive wines of Bordeaux. There are 2,000 cases of this dense ruby/purple-colored effort. It exhibits wonderful aromas of charcoal, incense, black currant liqueur, and licorice. Medium-bodied with stunning depth, richness, and texture, this sleeper of the vintage is a terrific buy. It should drink well for 10 years.

4 Chateau Plince
Chateau Plince
Pomerol   Cabernet Blend
"Deep ruby, almost purple at the core. Very aromatic, the nose displays notes of plum, red cherry, forest floor, rocky soil and a touch of new oak. Fruit flavors dominate the palate, balanced nicely with a persistent, earth-driven finish. Medium to full bodied, this exhibits subtle, fine-grained tannins. Made in a modern style, this is clearly Right Bank Bordeaux and very satisfying bottling, even in its youth."

12 Chateau Leoville Barton
Chateau Leoville Barton
St.-Julien   Cabernet Blend
WA92
This is an impressively endowed vin de garde that should age effortlessly for 20-30 years. How Anthony Barton continues to fashion uncompromisingly primordial Bordeaux that are always among the biggest and densest of all the St.-Juliens is beyond me, but he does it year in and year out. Moreover, when it’s time to set the price, he appears to have the consumer foremost in his mind. The 2004 is a classic Leoville-Barton meant for long aging. Concentrated, with loads of smoke, creme de cassis, forest floor, and earthy notes emerge from this impressive, but oh, so backward wine. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030+.

2004 $139.99
13 Chateau Mouton Rothschild
Chateau Mouton Rothschild
Pauillac   Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot
WA95
Blackberry, cherry and currant with just a hint of toasted oak. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a lovely combination of ripe fruit and vanilla character. Goes on and on. Long and very stylish. Balanced and refined. Best after 2011. 23,330 cases made. –JS

2003 $399.99
