1 Chateau Palmer
Chateau Palmer
Margaux
WS90
Good full deep red. Expressive aromas of roasted red raspberry, tobacco, chocolate and sandalwood; hints of dehydrated fruit. Sweet, fat and smoky, with good depth but only moderate complexity; shows an obvious warm-vintage character. Finishes with fairly sizable tannins and a lingering roasted character.

2003 $159.99

Chateau Dauzac
Margaux
ST86
Saturated ruby-red color. Spicy aromas of black fruits and minerals. Densely packed, very ripe and rather powerful in the mouth, if a bit youthfully inscrutable today. My enthusiasm for this impressively sweet wine was muted by its rather brutal, dry finish. Seems built to showcase ripeness and extraction more than Margaux typicity. One to follow.

2005 $99.99

Shafer Vineyards
Hillside Select Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon
ST94
Good saturated ruby-red. Superripe aromas of currant, tobacco, coffee, chocolate and maple syrup. Sweet, lush and suave, with a floral aspect; showing the vibrant, juicy quality of the vintage's better examples. Really spreads out to coat the palate. Finishes with big, sweet, broad tannins and a mineral note.

2004 $199.99

Taittinger
Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blanc Vintage
ST97
Pale, green-tinged color. Incredible shiver-producing 99-point nose combines peach, lemon, iodine and steely, petrolly, slatey soil tones; I was reminded of Chevalier-Montrachet and great Mosel riesling. Full and creamy-smooth but extremely young. This brilliantly minerally wine seems to thicken and intensify after 10 or 15 seconds in the mouth, offering layer upon layer of soil tones. A superconcentrated Champagne that completely avoids the heaviness shown by some '95s.

1995 $189.99
5 Snowden Vineyard
Snowden Vineyard
Napa Valley   Cabernet Sauvignon
WS93
Full medium ruby. Slightly porty, high-toned aromas of cassis and currant seed, plus a faint weedy nuance. Fairly concentrated flavors of cassis and menthol, but elevated acidity contributes to the impression of greenness. Somewhat pinched on the back half.

1997 $96.99

Dominus Estate
Napa Valley   Cabernet Sauvignon
ST92
Good ruby-red. Rich, smoky, expressive aromas of plum, currant, licorice, tobacco, game and leather. Suave and lush in the mouth, with explosive flavors of currant and graphite. Quite suave and pliant, offering excellent balance and full, broad, well-buffered tannins. This is just over 14% alcohol. The non-decanted version showed aromas of plum, redcurrant, mocha and nutty oak, and hints of tobacco leaf and licorice in the mouth. Though it was tighter and more firmly tannic, it also showed considerable early complexity. This distinctly claret-like vintage may well merit an even higher score with six to eight years of bottle aging.

2003 $123.99

  Brut Premier
BH92
Green-gold. Potent aromas of pear and apple liqueur plus an exotic note of fresh mushroom on the ripe, smoky nose. Deep, rich and concentrated, with a tangy note of white pepper adding interest and lift to the buttery orchard fruit flavors. The full, smoky finish shows a clinging, sappy quality and striking length.

Salon
  Blanc de Blanc Le Mesnil
BH97
Pungent, vivid aromas of pineapple, lime, rose petal, honeysuckle and powdered stone. Wonderfully dense and rich but fine-grained, with an almost velvety texture leavened by vibrant, harmonious acidity. A big, pliant, mouthcoating Salon with great ripeness of fruit and subtle floral and mineral notes. Amazingly solid Champagne that really coats the mouth on the explosive, building finish. Offers a rare combination of size and elegance. Deceptively easy to taste today owing to its richness but has the structure to develop in bottle for a decade or two.

1995 $329.00

Tasted by dajapino on 10/11/2006 & rated 94 points: Delicious. Bigger and more complex version of, say, Arlaud "clos de la roche". No heat despitre 15.1% alc. Nose of clove/cinnamon, indian spices, raspberry, cherry, some dark chocolate and tinge of mineral/chalk and barnyard/mushroom. Medium bodied with flavors of cherries, raspberries, and various spices and tinge of earth. Bravo. While I like the BC Melville better, this one's wonderful too.

  Kurni Montepulciano
The tiny property is situated in Cupra Marittima. The 1.4 hectares of vineyards are situated at an altitude of 80/100 metres above sea level and enjoy a south facing exposition. The soils here are calcerous with clay and sand. The Kurni is produced from 100% Montepulciano and the vines are some 35 years of age. The wines are given a long maceration and fermentation in stainless steel vats, (approximately 40 days), at a temperature of 28/30 degrees centigrade. They are aged in 225 litre French oak barriques for 18 to 20 months. They are then given a further four months bottle age before release. The 2003 got 91 points from the Spectator and this review: "Dense, with almost raisiny black fruit and polished oak character. Full-bodied and concentrated, with firm tannins and a long, oak-tinged fruit finish. Big, juicy wine. Montepulciano from old vines. Best after 2007. 500 cases made." 3 Glasses Gambero Rosso

2004 $135.00

ST94
Bright red-ruby. Knockout nose features boysenberry, currant, cedar, graphite and mocha. Suave, gentle and sweet, already displaying ineffable inner-mouth perfume. The 17% merlot component injects a silky component, and the oak element adds a complementary sweetness. Complex, lush, horizontal finish saturates the mouth with flavor. It was not clear to me in April that the 2006 would exceed this-and it will certainly take longer to reach full maturity in bottle.

2004 $284.99
16 Chateau Angelus
Chateau Angelus
Saint Emilion
ST94
Deep ruby. Incredible brooding nose combines blackberry, black cherry, minerals, violet and a liqueur of licorice. A lush, sexy wine of compelling sweetness, solidity and depth, with a pronounced cabernet franc minerality punching up the explosive fruit. The inexorable, endless finish features huge but thoroughly ripe tannins and terrific energy. As primary as this is, there's nothing hard about it. This is likely to age gracefully for two or three decades. The best vintage I've ever tasted from this property, and it's clearly one of the stars of this great vintage. Bouard notes that the IPT today is 96. The alcohol is 14.7% and the pH 3.7, compared to 14.2% and 3.95 for the 1990 vintage.

Spring Mountain Napa Valley Estate Bottled Cabernet Sauvignon
WS90
Saturated deep ruby. Reticent aromas of briary blackberry and licorice. Very intensely flavored and vibrant, with extremely primary, powerful flavors of cassis, black cherry and bitter chocolate. Still youthfully grapey. Very dense and very long. Offers very strong potential.

1999 $141.99

Chateau Bellevue-Mondotte
Saint Emilion
ST91
Bright ruby. Aromas of cassis, black raspberry and liquid graphite. Hugely concentrated but very backward, with exotic and extremely dark flavors of black fruits, licorice and violet. This has a surprisingly silky texture but the major tannins are going to require considerable patience. Better than I thought last year, but not for the faint of heart.

2005 $299.99
22 Chateau Palmer
Chateau Palmer
Margaux
ST91
Good deep ruby-red. Deep, ripe, minerally aromas of plum, mulberry, chocolate and mocha. This boasts a lovely sappy sweetness leavened by fresh acidity, with the chocolatey ripeness carrying through on the palate. Offers terrific but subtle depth of flavor. Wonderfully chewy, dense wine with very suave tannins, firm underlying structure and excellent grip.

2006 $203.99

Domaine des Comtes Lafon
  Meursault Clos de la Barre
ST90
Peach, orange and nuts on the nose. Round, fat, sweet and rich in the mouth, with very ripe citrus flavors. Wonderfully broad and full for the vintage but not at all heavy. Finishes ripe, fruity and long. This is about 13% natural alcohol. Lafon, who is a great fan of the 2004 vintage, believes that these wines will at some point go through 'an ugly stage,' but they are certainly delicious today.

2004 $116.99
25
Silver Oak Cellars
Napa Valley   Cabernet Sauvignon
WS91
Medium-deep red-ruby. Black cherry, shoe polish and menthol on the nose. Smoother than the Alexander '95, but rather lean and high in acidity. Finishes with firm, slightly hard tannins. Will need at least a couple years of bottle aging when it is released next winter.

1995 $148.99
