Hillside Select Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon
ST94
Good saturated ruby-red. Superripe aromas of currant, tobacco, coffee, chocolate and maple syrup. Sweet, lush and suave, with a floral aspect; showing the vibrant, juicy quality of the vintage''s better examples. Really spreads out to coat the palate. Finishes with big, sweet, broad tannins and a mineral note.

2006 $249.99

Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blanc Vintage
WA95
The 1999 is an absolutely delicious Comtes de Champagne that needs to be opened at least an hour or two in advance to show at its finest. Smoke, citrus, mint and flowers are some of the nuances that emerge from this fresh, fragrant Champagne. Deceptively lithe on the palate, the wine blossoms with air as it fills out with endless layers of perfumed fruit. The wine can be enjoyed today, even if it comes across as a touch sweet. With time, that sweetness will develop into the liqueur-like perfume that makes older Comtes de Champagne so irresistibly alluring.

1999 $189.99

Salon
  Blanc de Blanc Le Mesnil
BH97
Pungent, vivid aromas of pineapple, lime, rose petal, honeysuckle and powdered stone. Wonderfully dense and rich but fine-grained, with an almost velvety texture leavened by vibrant, harmonious acidity. A big, pliant, mouthcoating Salon with great ripeness of fruit and subtle floral and mineral notes. Amazingly solid Champagne that really coats the mouth on the explosive, building finish. Offers a rare combination of size and elegance. Deceptively easy to taste today owing to its richness but has the structure to develop in bottle for a decade or two.

1995 $329.00

Brewer Clifton
Santa Rita Hills Cargasacchi Pinot Noir
WE93
Tasted by dajapino on 10/11/2006 & rated 94 points: Delicious. Bigger and more complex version of, say, Arlaud "clos de la roche". No heat despitre 15.1% alc. Nose of clove/cinnamon, indian spices, raspberry, cherry, some dark chocolate and tinge of mineral/chalk and barnyard/mushroom. Medium bodied with flavors of cherries, raspberries, and various spices and tinge of earth. Bravo. While I like the BC Melville better, this one's wonderful too.

Philip Togni Vineyard
Spring Mountain Napa Valley Estate Bottled Cabernet Sauvignon
WS90
Saturated deep ruby. Reticent aromas of briary blackberry and licorice. Very intensely flavored and vibrant, with extremely primary, powerful flavors of cassis, black cherry and bitter chocolate. Still youthfully grapey. Very dense and very long. Offers very strong potential.

1999 $141.99

Joseph Drouhin
  Grands Echezeaux
ST89
Moderately saturated medium red. Closed, reduced nose hints at redcurrant, plum and smoke. Rather austere in the mouth, with an edge of acidity and apparent oak currently overshadowing the wine's fruit, earth and spice elements. Very firm wine but today it's a bit dry and edgy, even austere. This is very difficult to taste and needs time.

2004 $139.99
15
Domaine Leflaive Puligny
  Puligny Montrachet Les Folatieres
ST89
Very pure, perfumed aromas of peach and white flowers. Juicy and taut, with sharply delineated flavors of peach, lemon, flowers and minerals. Lovely harmonious acidity extends the wine's finish. The first of these wines to show 'the real final balance' of 2004, notes Morey.

2004 $171.99
16
Stag's Leap Wine Cellars
Napa Valley Stags Leap District SLV Cabernet Sauvignon
BH91
Good bright ruby-red. Currant, cedar, earth and graphite aromas, with hints of bandaid and tobacco leaf. Juicy and primary, with elevated acidity giving the moderately ripe currant, sour cherry and coconutty oak flavors a slight hard edge. Finishes with dusty, slightly drying tannins.

2003 $105.99
17
Chateau Langoa Barton
Saint Julien
ST88
Deep red. Low-toned aromas of cherry, smoke and earth. Lush and rich but quite dry, with rather powerful flavors of redcurrant, chocolate, minerals and leather. A bit dominated today by its firm acids and substantial dusty tannins, which build with aeration. This can't match the 2005 Leoville-Barton for vinosity.

2005 $85.99
18
Chateau Montrose
Saint Estephe
ST88
Bright ruby-red. Cool but complex aromas of currant, red cherry, licorice and fresh herbs, with hints of olive and smoke. Supple and sweet but a bit medicinal and stern, with the herbal element carrying through in the mouth; could use more stuffing. Finishes with substantial tongue-dusting tannins. This is refined but subdued today, showing less concentration and earthy character than the wines made by Laguarigue from 2000 through 2005. Developing slowly.

2006 $85.99
19
Joh. Jos. Prum
Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Gold Capsule Brut
ST96
Golden yellow. Christmas fruitcake with nectarine, white raisin and pure botrytis on the nose. High-toned, creamy and rich, with flavors of apricot nectar, fine slate and brown spices, with an elegant floral element. A sublime touch of botrytis adds complexity to the long, mineral finish. This is one of the finest ausleses of the vintage.

2005 $96.99
20 Beringer Vineyards
Beringer Vineyards
Napa Valley Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
WA90
Deliciously rich and concentrated, the layers of herb, mint, cherry and plum flavors are tightly wound together and framed by toasty oak and firm tannins. Elegant and stylish, this beautifully proportioned wine echoes fruit and oak.

1986 $139.99
21 Twomey Cellars
Twomey Cellars
Napa Valley   Merlot
ST90
Dark red. Flamboyant, sexy aromas of black raspberry, blackcurrant, chocolate, coffee and smoked meat. Lush, broad and full but quite dry, with notes of currant, chocolate and tobacco. Pliant, sophisticated merlot with real personality. Finishes with fine tannins and lingering, dry flavors.

2001 $80.99
22
Kistler Vineyards
Sonoma Valley Kistler Estate Vineyard Chardonnay
ST93
Light gold. Slow-building pear, peach and nectarine aromas, with strong mineral and floral undertones. Subtle spice and smoke complicate fresh pear and pit fruit flavors; slowly unfolds to show more energetic citrus tones. Finishes precise and mineral-driven, with excellent length. 'Decant this and make sure it's not too cold,' Kistler advises.

2004 $106.99

Brewer Clifton
  Ashley's Vineyard Pinot Noir
WA90
Born of an obsession with Santa Barbara County terroir, we formed Brewer-Clifton in the early 1990’s. We both had significant sales and production experience with a multitude of Santa Barbara County wineries, and always felt compelled to push the limits of the fruit from the area further than our previous employers had set forth to do. We set out to put the essence of the best vineyards in the area into a bottle. We focus our efforts solely on the production of vineyard designated Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from several carefully selected, extreme vineyards in the Sta. Rita Hills appellation. The area's long growing seasons and diversity of marine-based soils combine to produce dynamic and explosive wines with great purity and precision. Each vineyard site is nurtured identically, allowing the pedigree of place to play the most significant role in our portfolio of wines. In addition to our collective efforts, Steve Clifton also produces wine under his own label, called Palmina, which focuses exclusively on Italian varietals, and is the winemaker at Tritono, an Argentine producer of Malbec. Greg Brewer produces wine under the diatom label, as well as being the winemaker at Melville, a Santa Rita Hills winery dedicated to estate grown Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah. Brewer-Clifton wines are only available in small quantities. Total production averages between 4,000 and 6,500 cases annually.

Forman Vineyard
Napa Valley   Cabernet Sauvignon
ST92
Good bright ruby-red. Aromas of blackberry, blueberry, licorice and aromatic spices. Richer and seemingly riper than the young 2005, but with lovely definition to the flavors of redcurrant and sour cherry. This features a lusher, softer, sweeter middle followed by chewier and more obvious tannins that showed a firmer edge with aeration.

2004 $80.99
