Fattoria di Felsina
Chianti Classico
Riserva "Rancia"
Sangiovese
ST

95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Impressive dark ruby color. Expressive aromas of blackcurrant, plum, mint and cigar box, all lifted by a mineral element. Dense and rich, combining pinot noir-like texture and refinement with syrah-like flavors of rare meat and raspberry liqueur. This boasts a wonderfully tactile feel and a remarkably long, palate-staining finish. A great Chianti with loads of personality." (July/Aug 07)

Medium ruby. Red and black fruit aromas are currently dominated by eucalyptus and menthol. Sweet, soft flavors of ripe black cherry and smoky plum are complicated by balsamic oak and black pepper notes. The moderately long, slightly warm finish reveals serious tannins that will require patience-something true of all the reds from this estate.
winemaker's notes: The grapes are carefully selected in the vineyards and harvested in 8-kilo crates. They are destemmed, not crushed, after which they are conveyed into temperature controlled stainless steel vats for alcoholic fermentation and maceration. After completing a full malolactic fermentation the wine is transferred into 100% French oak barrels. The Sangiovese barrels consist of 30% new and 70% one or two year old oak. The other blends' barrels consist of 80% new oak. Barrel maturation lasts up to 14 months and during that time the wine is regularly racked and tasted. At the conclusion of the maturation, the best lots are selected and assembled to create the final blend.

Barone Ricasoli
Chianti Classico
Brolio
Sangiovese
WS
92
The Brolio Chianti Classico 2003 moves on from where the fabulous 2002 left-off. Ricasoli’s own Sangiovese vineyards in Gaiole were the source of fruit for this wine, with the vineyards reaching nearly 500 meters above sea-level in some parts. The wine spends 12 months in French Oak barrels and barriques resulting in a wine that is bright ruby red in colour with rich flavours of mature fruit. Aromas of violets and spice lead on to a palate that is elegant and refined thanks to good acidity and well balanced tannins.

Paitin
d'Alba Serra Boella
Barbera
WS
84
Paitin's Barbera D' Alba Serra Beolla is a good starting point to experience quality, affordable wines from Italy. This wine embodies everything right about Italian red wines. First of all, it tastes great with food - pastas (red sauce), pizza, hamburgers, barbecue, and other reasonably hearty foods. There's brisk acidity in the wine, along with dark berry (cherries and blackberries) flavors on the palate, and a taste (which I can't describe) that is the essence of Barbera. It can be drunk now, or aged for a very few years (best to enjoy now and over the next 24 months).

Shows tarry black fruit, with a light raisiny edge. Full-bodied, with silky, fruit-coated tannins and a clean, well-structured finish that shows persistent fruit. There''s notes of citrus fruits as well. Nicely done. Best after 2009. 22,000 cases made. –JC
