1 Belle Glos
Belle Glos
Santa Lucia Highlands Las Alturas Vineyard Pinot Noir
WE87
A strong minty quality dominates the aroma and flavor, which some will find more alluring. Tight and concentrated, with herb-laced berry flavors that are focused and long. Drink now through 2010. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 1,325 cases made.

2007 $51.99
2 Querciabella
Querciabella
  Batar IGT Sangiovese

2003 $60.99
3
Morgan Winery
Santa Lucia Highlands Tondre's Grapefield Roussanne Viognier
BH88
Fairly spartan in its first aromas, and opening only grudgingly as it airs, the nose leans towards richness but is quiet in expressed fruit and does little to presage the deeper wine that follows on the palate. More energy than expected and a certain lightness of step despite the wine's extracted flavors lift the wine significantly but also invite puckery tannin into the mix. There is a clear need for a few years of bottle aging.

2005 $48.99
4
Failla
Santa Rita Hills Rancho Santa Rosa Roussanne Viognier
ST90
Medium red. Smoky aromas of strawberry, raspberry, stone and underbrush. Slightly reduced today but there's good lush fruit underneath. Juicy and lively in the mouth, with a restrained sweetness and enticing sugar/acid snap. Finishes with very good length.

2005 $61.99
5 Chateau Couhins Lurton
Chateau Couhins Lurton
  Pessac Leognan Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon
WS91
Offers aromas of blackberry and earth, with a full body and rich, velvety tannins. There's loads of fruit and spice, with tobacco and chocolate in the aftertaste. Very Pessac. Best after 2013.w.s.

2003 $54.99
6
Chateau Lucia
Saint Emilion
ST87
Bright medium ruby. Reticent but pure nose offers blackberry, violet, tar, licorice and minerals. Suave and silky-smooth in texture, and distinctly gentler than the 2005. A moderately concentrated wine that could use a bit more grip and thrust. But nicely balanced, and the tannins are sweet.

2006 $47.99
7 Chateau Palmer
Chateau Palmer
Margaux Alter Ego
ST87
Bright ruby-red. Very ripe aromas of plum, mulberry, chocolate and animal fur. Sweet and reasonably deep, with good definition and energy. Finishes with fairly serious but nicely buffered tannins and very good length. This still needs some time to come together.

2006 $42.99
8
Chateau Brane Cantenac
Margaux
ST87
Red-ruby. Aromas of black plum, violet and bitter chocolate. Juicy and pliant but showing its oaky side now, with a strong torrefaction quality of dark chocolate currently overshadowing the wine's fruit. But this is quite supple and the tannins are in balance with the wine's fruit.

2006 $48.99
9
Chateau Rauzan Gassies
Margaux
ST85
Good full ruby. Blackberry pastille, licorice and violet on the nose. Juicy, moderately dense and dry; rather powerful for this Margaux, perhaps a function of extraction. Concentrated but distinctly dry-edged on the back, with tough tannins. Also tasted: 2003 Rauzan-Gassies*.

2005 $42.99
10 Dr. Loosen
Dr. Loosen
Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Riesling
WS95
This light-weight, intensely flavored Riesling shows fine crunch and snap thanks to the acidity, which creates a foil for the peach, lime and vanilla custard flavors that are woven into the creamy texture. Drink now through 2025.

2005 $51.99
11 Beringer Vineyards
Beringer Vineyards
Howell Mountain Rancho del Osos Cabernet Sauvignon
ST91
Deep saturated ruby. Vinous, complex nose combines currant, bitter chocolate, fresh herbs and tobacco. Then sweet, fat, lush and deep, with a surprisingly pliant texture for Howell Mountain cabernet. Very sweet currant, plum, chocolate and spice flavors. Finishes with thoroughly ripe, suave tannins and terrific lingering sweetness. Large-scaled but quite approachable. A superb showing today.

2001 $74.99
12 Castello della Paneretta
Castello della Paneretta
Chianti Classico Riserva Vigneto Torre a Destra Sangiovese
WS90
Lots of raspberry and strawberry jam character with vanilla undertones. Full, thick and rich. Long. Very flavorful and stylish. Drink now. 1,000 cases made.

2003 $43.99
13 Graham's
Graham's
Tawny 20 Year Old Port
WS89
Pretty honey, caramel and butterscotch, with a hint of prunes. Medium-bodied and medium sweet, with a fresh finish. Try it with chocolate. Drink now. 2,500 cases imported.

$42.99
14
Chateau de St. Cosme
  Gigondas Valbelle
ST92
Inky violet. Strong licorice and espresso notes accent spiced cherry and cassis on the nose. Muscular flavors of dark fruits, espresso and tobacco are framed by solid tannins that dominate the wine's finish today. There's outstanding material here and I'm looking forward to seeing it after it has had some cellar time.

2005 $53.99
15
Chateau Kirwan
Margaux
ST89
Good medium ruby. Boysenberry, dark chocolate, smoked meat and sexy oak on the ripe, inviting nose. Lush and full for the vintage, with dark berry flavors saturating the palate. Finishes with sweet, fine, broad tannins that spread out to coat the entire mouth. An impressive showing.

2006 $45.99
16 Taittinger
Taittinger
  Brut La Francaise
ST89
Fruity aromas of apple, orange blossom, toast and nuts. Fat, ripe and suave; a medium-bodied, middle-of-the-road wine with a moderate dosage and a nice light touch. Finishes clean and persistent. An excellent non-vintage brut.

$51.99
17 Chateau Lafaurie Peyraguey
Chateau Lafaurie Peyraguey
  Sauternes Sauvignon Blanc
WA92
There's beautiful ripe fruit in this, with pineapple, mango and papaya and hints of vanilla and honey. Full-bodied and medium sweet. Rich and round, with loads of cooked apple, citrus peel and spices. Long and flavorful. Dense and rich. Best after 2012. 6,250 cases made. –JS

2005 $72.99
18 Leeuwin Estate
Leeuwin Estate
Art Series Margaret River   Cabernet Sauvignon
ST92
Deep red. Deep, brooding aromas of creme de cassis, blackberry, bitter chocolate and anise. Quite ripe and dark in character, with flavors of sweet dark berries, roasted coffee, fruitcake and molasses. Finishes quite rich, with dusty tannins. Blackberry and bitter chocolate flavors deepen as the wine opens in the glass.

2003 $40.99
19 Domaine Carneros
Domaine Carneros
Carneros Le Reve Blanc de Blancs Chardonnay
ST94
Carneros. Once again, Le Reve emerges at the top of the ratings, and it is the wine''s impeccable adherence to the crisp, buoyant Blanc de Blancs style that puts it there. Its aromas offer a lovely mix of sweet citrus and creamy yeast components that combine both depth and appealing lightness, and they are followed on the palate by a perfectly appointed mousse and a refined set of rich, airy, pristinely fruity, stony, minerally flavors. Balanced and complex, deep and light at the same time, this one is about as good as it gets in Blanc de Blancs.

2000 $53.99
20
Chateau Du Tertre
Margaux
WS88
Good full red. Roasted currant, plum jam and chocolate on the nose, with complicating notes of leather and meat. Sweet on entry, then a bit roasted in the middle; not particularly complex but offers good fruit and balance. Finishes with dusty tannins and good length.

2003 $42.99
21
Foley Estates
Santa Rita Hills Rancho Santa Rosa Chardonnay
BH91
Bright yellow. Low-toned, very ripe aromas of apricot, honey and nuts. Fat, ripe and broad, with just enough acid grip to give shape to the flavors of apricot and nutty oak. Turned a bit dry with aeration, with a slightly harsh nut skin character on the back.

2004 $48.99
22
WillaKenzie Estate
Willamette Valley Emery Roussanne Viognier
ST90
Ruby-red. Ripe cherry and cassis aromas are deep and expansive, with musky tobacco and roasted coffee notes adding complexity. Broad and chewy, with concentrated dark berry flavors, solid tannins and a suggestion of pomegranate molasses on the back. Finishes with impressively ripe cassis and kirsch notes and impressive length. A big boy.

2004 $42.99
23 Ferrari-Carano Winery
Ferrari-Carano Winery
Alexander Valley   Chardonnay
WS90
Toast and butter lead the way in the nose here, but fruit lags a bit and there is a marked lack of life in both the wine's aromas and flavors. Despite having good weight and plenty of tactile presence, this one slips away too soon to dryness and promises little with age.

2004 $40.99
24 Beringer Vineyards
Beringer Vineyards
Napa Valley Sbragia Limited Release Chardonnay
ST92
Good pale color. Higher-pitched aromas of pineapple and stone. Plump and thick, but given shape and grip by firm-edged acidity. Very ripe flavors are complemented by a wild truffley quality. Finishes bright, firm and very long. This was picked 'at the limit,' noted Sbragia. Aged in 100% new oak, vs. 75% for the 'regular' reserve bottling.

2004 $42.99
25 Londer Vineyards
Londer Vineyards
Anderson Valley   Pinot Noir
WS92
Pure and delicious, with rich, creamy raspberry, spice, blackberry, lavender, blueberry and fresh earth and mineral flavors. Finishes with a burst of fruit and firm tannins. Drink now through 2011. 1,949 cases made.

2004 $47.99
