Tondre's Grapefield
Roussanne Viognier
BH

Fairly spartan in its first aromas, and opening only grudgingly as it airs, the nose leans towards richness but is quiet in expressed fruit and does little to presage the deeper wine that follows on the palate. More energy than expected and a certain lightness of step despite the wine's extracted flavors lift the wine significantly but also invite puckery tannin into the mix. There is a clear need for a few years of bottle aging.

This light-weight, intensely flavored Riesling shows fine crunch and snap thanks to the acidity, which creates a foil for the peach, lime and vanilla custard flavors that are woven into the creamy texture. Drink now through 2025.

Deep saturated ruby. Vinous, complex nose combines currant, bitter chocolate, fresh herbs and tobacco. Then sweet, fat, lush and deep, with a surprisingly pliant texture for Howell Mountain cabernet. Very sweet currant, plum, chocolate and spice flavors. Finishes with thoroughly ripe, suave tannins and terrific lingering sweetness. Large-scaled but quite approachable. A superb showing today.

Green-gold. Potent aromas of pear and apple liqueur plus an exotic note of fresh mushroom on the ripe, smoky nose. Deep, rich and concentrated, with a tangy note of white pepper adding interest and lift to the buttery orchard fruit flavors. The full, smoky finish shows a clinging, sappy quality and striking length.

Good pale color. Higher-pitched aromas of pineapple and stone. Plump and thick, but given shape and grip by firm-edged acidity. Very ripe flavors are complemented by a wild truffley quality. Finishes bright, firm and very long. This was picked 'at the limit,' noted Sbragia. Aged in 100% new oak, vs. 75% for the 'regular' reserve bottling.

Light gold. Intensely mineral aromas of iodine-accented peach, melon, anise, marzipan and nougat. Lush, expansive and powerful stone fruit and melon flavors really stain the palate, picking up licorice and citrus pith notes on the back. This is more linear and taut than a bottle of the superb 2002 showed recently, and has the balance to reward at least six years of cellaring. It seems to have more energy, too. As usual, one of the best Australian chardonnays of the year.

Bright, deep ruby-red. Sappy black raspberry, smoked meat, black pepper and hints of chocolate and graphite on the complex nose. Dense and ripe but quite primary and backward today, with intriguing pepper and meaty nuances and a distinctly dry character. Already hints at the complexity to come but this rather Rhone-like wine will need at least a couple years of bottle aging.
