Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blanc Vintage
WA95
The 1999 is an absolutely delicious Comtes de Champagne that needs to be opened at least an hour or two in advance to show at its finest. Smoke, citrus, mint and flowers are some of the nuances that emerge from this fresh, fragrant Champagne. Deceptively lithe on the palate, the wine blossoms with air as it fills out with endless layers of perfumed fruit. The wine can be enjoyed today, even if it comes across as a touch sweet. With time, that sweetness will develop into the liqueur-like perfume that makes older Comtes de Champagne so irresistibly alluring.

1999 $189.99

  Chambertin Clos de Beze
WS94
Bright, deep red. Superripe yet vibrant and perfumed aromas of black raspberry, rose petal and minerals. Very ripe and highly concentrated; creamy yet firm, thanks to powerful underlying structure. A wine of great energy, density and soil character, and an infant today. Finishes with outstanding palate-staining persistence and a slightly saline quality. This should evolve spectacularly for at least 15 to 20 years. A great wine in the making.

2003 $246.99

  Prelude

Pale color. Highly aromatic nose combines apple, pear, orange zest, brown butter, toasted bread and baking spices. Bright, creamy and quite fine, with a subtle leesiness and hints of citrus fruits, flowers, minerals and spices. This has good mouthfilling extract without any excess weight. Finishes long, ripe and firmly dry. A 50/50 blend of pinot noir and chardonnay.

  Grands Echezeaux
ST89
Moderately saturated medium red. Closed, reduced nose hints at redcurrant, plum and smoke. Rather austere in the mouth, with an edge of acidity and apparent oak currently overshadowing the wine's fruit, earth and spice elements. Very firm wine but today it's a bit dry and edgy, even austere. This is very difficult to taste and needs time.

2004 $139.99

Domaine Leflaive Puligny
  Puligny Montrachet Les Folatieres
ST89
Very pure, perfumed aromas of peach and white flowers. Juicy and taut, with sharply delineated flavors of peach, lemon, flowers and minerals. Lovely harmonious acidity extends the wine's finish. The first of these wines to show 'the real final balance' of 2004, notes Morey.

2004 $171.99

Chateau Malescot St. Exupery
Margaux
ST89
Red-ruby. High-pitched aromas of blackberry, violet and dark chocolate. Juicy, bright and quite tight, with an inky quality and good clarity to the intense dark berry flavors. Lively and persistent, finishing with smooth, harmonious tannins and excellent lift and length. This was a standout in the Union des Grands Crus Margaux tasting. My subsequent sample at the estate began a bit more chunky, with a ripe, chocolatey character and slightly rough tannins, but showed a candied blackberry element and more intense fruit with aeration, turning much more expressive and gaining in freshness.

2006 $169.99

Chateau Kirwan
Margaux
ST89
Good medium ruby. Boysenberry, dark chocolate, smoked meat and sexy oak on the ripe, inviting nose. Lush and full for the vintage, with dark berry flavors saturating the palate. Finishes with sweet, fine, broad tannins that spread out to coat the entire mouth. An impressive showing.

2006 $129.99

Saint Estephe

Red-ruby. Perfumed, highly complex nose offers black cherry, currant, iron, mocha, smoked meat, flowers and a whiff of bonfire. Rich, sweet and densely packed, with lovely delineation and inner-mouth aromatic character. The cool August shows in the wine's slight medicinal austerity, but this is juicy, pure and vibrant, and the tannins are quite fine. May not show the grip or length of a great year but this is an outperformer for this appellation in 2006. The estate did a gentle extraction, with a maceration limited to 18 days, in search of silky tannins, according to Madame Gasqueton.

2006 $189.99

Chateau Langoa Barton
Saint Julien
ST88
Deep red. Low-toned aromas of cherry, smoke and earth. Lush and rich but quite dry, with rather powerful flavors of redcurrant, chocolate, minerals and leather. A bit dominated today by its firm acids and substantial dusty tannins, which build with aeration. This can't match the 2005 Leoville-Barton for vinosity.

2005 $85.99

Chateau Giscours
Margaux
ST88
Bright ruby-red. Cool, inky aromas of kirsch and berries; pure but restrained today. Ripe and rich, with a broad, airy texture; conveys an impression of fullness without weight or excess sweetness. Quite gentle for the vintage. Expands nicely on the broad finish, which features sweet, fine tannins. The wine's volume is impressive but will it be bottled with the energy to merit a 90+ rating?

2006 $101.99

Chateau Montrose
Saint Estephe
ST88
Bright ruby-red. Cool but complex aromas of currant, red cherry, licorice and fresh herbs, with hints of olive and smoke. Supple and sweet but a bit medicinal and stern, with the herbal element carrying through in the mouth; could use more stuffing. Finishes with substantial tongue-dusting tannins. This is refined but subdued today, showing less concentration and earthy character than the wines made by Laguarigue from 2000 through 2005. Developing slowly.

2006 $85.99

Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blanc Vintage
BH91
In contrast to the wines directly above in this list of exquisite Champagnes, this one is decidedly on the austere, citrusy side of the equation and gets its points for finesse and for its precise rendering of the quietly toasty, crisp Blanc de Blancs style. Its bubbles are delightfully pinpointy in size, and the richness and well-mannered complexity of its flavors are bound to please.

1998 $159.99

Pavillon   Sauvignon Blanc
ST91
Very pale color. Crystallized ginger, candied grapefruit, lime skin, melon and mint on the nose. Rich and quite primary, combining very ripe yellow fruit notes with more bracing licorice and mint. Very dense and quite dry, even a bit youthfully aggressive today. Conveys a tactile sense of mineral dust. The yield here was just 12 hectoliters per hectare due to spring frost, according to estate manager Paul Pontallier, and some lots came in with 16% potential alcohol. Very concentrated, palate-staining with a long pineappley finish that leaves the mouth feeling fresh.
