Caymus Vineyards
California Conundrum Sauvignon Blanc
Conundrum 2009 exhibits soft tropical notes of guava and cherimoya, also peach and honeysuckle. The rich perfume is supported by concentrated and focused layers of peach and apricot nectar, pear and green melon with spicy vanilla notes. The creamy texture and balanced acidity carries through the palate for a long finish.

2009 $23.99
27 Burgess Cellars
Burgess Cellars
Napa Valley   Merlot
ST90
Reserved, dusty aromas of black fruit, coffee bean and clove with touches of smoke and coconut. Gritty flavors of plum, black cherry, minerals, bittersweet chocolate and iodine are more expressive than suggested by the nose. Silky close.

2004 $23.99
28 Bearboat
Bearboat
Russian River Valley   Pinot Noir
Bearboat is aged in French oak for ten months. The wine has a beautiful cherry like color and has tastes of fresh strawberries and raspberries. The Bearboat Pinot Noir is a perfectly balanced red. It nicely accompanies lamb, beef and pork.

2006 $23.99
29 Domaine Chandon
Domaine Chandon
  Etoile Brut Cuvee Chardonnay
ST89
This very well-made wine seems to straddle the line between California fruitiness and the more complex yeast and mineral aspects of French Champagne. It leads with rich aromas of lemons, ginger, cream and lightly toasted nuts, and its briskly finished flavors confirm much of the same. Its mousse is light, yet fairly creamy, and only a bare bit of last-minute coarseness keeps it from higher award.

$29.99
30 Cakebread
Cakebread
Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc Sauvignon Blanc
WS88
Displays bright, sun-kissed aromas of fresh guava, grapefruit, lime and mineral, with hints of honeydew melon and golden apple. On the sprightly palate, brisk white grapefruit, guava, melon and lemon-lime flavors, with hints of pineapple and kiwi fruit on the long, refreshing finish. It is a great apertif or is delightful with a shellfish, pan-fried trout and snapper, Caesar Salad, roast chicken and turkey, and pasta primavera. Enjoy it now or age for 2-4 years.

Citrus, melon and passion fruit notes are tasty and direct, showing nice acidity to the apple and peach flavors, with a spicy finish. Drink now.
2009 $30.99

33 Stags'' Leap Winery
Stags'' Leap Winery
Napa Valley Merlot Merlot
Merlot vines grow exceptionally in the Bale Loams of Stags’ Leap: alluvial soils with volcanic ash minerality. Underneath the top layer exists a deeper layer of sandy loam laced with gravel and cobbles, allowing the kind of quick and thorough drainage that leaves the vines a little thirsty, concentrating their flavors. Careful vineyard selection, followed by meticulous farming yields a Merlot with rich fruit flavors, full body, and firm structure.

2006 $32.99
34 Burgess Cellars
Burgess Cellars
Napa Valley   Cabernet Sauvignon
ST87
Tough, dry and cedary, with fresh earth, mineral and dried currant flavors that end on a leathery note. Drink now through 2008. 8,000 cases made.

2003 $33.99
35 Jordan
Jordan
Chardonnay   Chardonnay
A subtle but intense nose of buttery fruit and toasty oak is followed by a medium to full-bodied wine with good acidity, a fresh, lively palate, and plenty of honeyed apple and orange like fruit. Drink it over the next 1-2 years. This winery is so successful that it is almost impossible to find their wines except on this country''s finer restaurant wine lists.

2009 $33.99
36 Beaulieu Vineyard
Beaulieu Vineyard
Napa Valley Tapestry Meritage Red Bordeaux Blend
WA93
Dec 2009 Robert Parker 93 Drink: 2009 - 2024 $45 (50) The 2006 Proprietary Red Wine Tapestry Reserve (a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot) is the finest example of this cuvee I have ever tasted. Flowery, licorice-infused, cassis notes intermixed with forest floor and lead pencil shavings are followed by a layered, impressively built wine with real opulence, lots of red and black fruits, low acidity, and lush tannin. It should drink well for 15+ years. One of the most dramatic revelations in my California North Coast tastings was the resurrection/renaissance of Beaulieu Vineyard, one of the historic names in California winedom. This was the source of some extraordinary Cabernet Sauvignons in the fifties, sixties, and early seventies, but the winery fell on hard times and was sold (it is now owned by the gigantic Diageo company). However, they have come back with a vengeance over the last few vintages. Michel Rolland, the brilliant wine consultant, was brought in to help resurrect the Private Reserve program, and it appears his magic has spilled over onto the other wines as well.

2006 $37.50
37 The Ojai Vineyard
The Ojai Vineyard
Santa Barbara County Bien Nacido Vineyard Syrah
WS92
Dark-hued, intense and spicy, with rich layers of wild berry, sage and herb, picking up a hint of chocolate and espresso bean on the finish, where the tannins are rich and tight. Drink now through 2011. 871 cases made. –JL

2003 $37.99
