1 Chateau Belgrave
Chateau Belgrave
    Cabernet, Merlot
WS91
An impressive effort from this Haut-Medoc property, the 2005 Belgrave possesses a deep ruby/purple color as well as notes of damp earth, cedar, herbs, black cherries, and currants, good acidity, moderately high tannin, an admirable, layered texture, and fine purity and overall balance. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2022.

2005 $43.99
2 Chateau de St. Cosme
Chateau de St. Cosme
Gigondas   Grenache Syrah

Packed with raspberry ganache, bittersweet cocoa, loam and briar notes, all pushed by a dark, muscular finish. Tangy minerality is buried deep on the finish, so cellar for maximum effect. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Best from 2010 through 2015. 3,165 cases made. –JM

Delas
Crozes Hermitage Le clos Syrah
WS91
The outstanding 2005 Crozes-Hermitage Le Clos is tannic, with tart acids, but impressive levels of extract, mostly cassis, licorice, olive, and spice box characteristics. It requires 3-4 years of cellaring, and should drink well for two decades.

2005 $52.99
4 Alain Graillot
Alain Graillot
Crozes-Hermitage   Syrah
WS92
A big, brawny style, with a loamy structure supporting the dark currant, tar, cocoa, and fig paste flavors. Long and muscular on the finish, this needs to stretch out a bit in the cellar, though the fleshiness makes it hard to resist now. Best from 2008 through 2012. 5,000 cases made.

2005 $53.00
5 Chateau Couhins-Lurton

Full of fresh blackberry and plum notes, this firmly structured red is straightforward, gushing with ripe black fruit. The tannins are dominant on the finish, but what fruit. Needs time. Best from 2011 through 2024. –BS

9 Chateau Beau-Sejour-Becot
Chateau Beau-Sejour-Becot
Becot St-emilion Merlot Cabernet Franc
WA93
From a 41-acre vineyard situated on St.-Emilion’s limestone plateau, Beau-Sejour-Becot’s blend can vary, but it is approximately 70% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. Production can be as low as 4,000+ cases (in a tiny vintage such as 2003), or as high as 7,000+ cases (in an abundant year such as 2004). The 2003, which reminds me of a 1990 Right Bank Bordeaux, tips the scales at 13.5% alcohol. Its dark plum/ruby/purple color is followed by a sweet nose of creosote, scorched earth, black cherries, currants, and pain grille. Deep, full-flavored, muscular, textured, and rich with light to moderate tannin in the finish, this lavishly rich, full-bodied effort requires 1-3 years of bottle age, and should drink well over the following 12-15.

2003 $69.99
10 Chateau Lynch Bages
Chateau Lynch Bages
Pauillac   Cabernet, Merlot
WS92

2006 $72.99
11 Clos du Mont Olivet
Clos du Mont Olivet
Châteauneuf-du-Pape   Rhône Red Blend
ST95
Restrained, with serious structure underlying the raspberry and blackberry fruit flavors, this shows alluring perfume and a minerally spine on the back end, which really stretches out the finish. Drink now through 2027. 4,165 cases made.

Top 100 WS 2007: Nr. 32
2005 $74.99
12 Chateau Petit Village
Chateau Petit Village
Pomerol   Merlot
WS92
Milk chocolate and blackberry aromas follow through to a full body, with very soft tannins and a long, caressing finish. This is so delicious now, but has a balance of fruit and tannins. One of the best from this estate in some time. Best after 2014. 2,500 cases made. –JS

2005 $79.99
13 Chateau La Tour-Pessac-Léognan
Chateau La Tour-Pessac-Léognan
Haut-Brion   Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon
