Burgundy Collection

Burgundy Collection Burgundy, that tiny sliver of land in the center of France, produces what many consider to be the ultimate wine. Indeed, some of the world’s greatest, most complex and most refined red wines are produced from the Pinot Noir and white wines from the Chardonnay grape from this viticultural region. Ask many a wine lover “what is your most memorable wine?” and chances are it will be a grand cru Burgundy. Great Burgundy is undeniably, unforgettable. Unfortunately , it is also rare. The entire vineyard area of Burgundy, from Chablis to Beaujolais, covers less than half of the area of New York city! But by all means do not let this stop you from experiencing the pleasure of fine Burgundy wine. Our list is full of the most legendary as well as the handful of the yet not so famous names in Burgundy. Our Burgundy buyer, Joe Kluchinsky, travels to Burgundy at least once a year expressly to eek out the very best to be offered for your enjoyment. Early indications are that there are some legendary 2003 red Burgundies produced – unique and singular wines that will have no peers. It will not, however, be as uniformly good a vintage as 2002. With the vintage being a relatively small crop, many producers were forced to increase their prices. This fact, coupled with the strong Euro against the dollar has created an atmosphere conducive to higher pricing. Please check our website frequently as purchases will be posted as soon as new orders are confirmed by our suppliers. A better strategy for buying Burgundy may be going back instead of going forward. Older wines, purchased with a stronger dollar, will be priced more attractively than their younger counterparts. There are still many high quality wines available from these older vintages. Look carefully and I’m sure you’ll find something to quench your thirst for great Burgundy.

Rose Cremant Bourgogne Brut Pinot Noir
This bright clean sparkling wine is naturally fermented in this bottle, in the Champagne Method. It comes from rocky soils near St. Bris, in the Cote d''Auxerre near Chablis. Itis made of 60% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay, 10% Aligoté, and 10% Gamay. The aligoté gives it a citric quality and refreshing acidity. This is terrific alterantive to Champagne, if you are on a budget but want that crips, bright, focused quality of Champagne

This Aligoté comes from 80 year old vines in Magny les Villiers, an area once farmed by the monks of Cluny. It is spicy and long on the plate. 8 Domaine Calliot
Domaine Calliot
Meursault Clos du Cromin Chardonnay
Michel Caillot is the nephew of Pierre Morey, former winemaker at Domaine Leflaive, and now proprietor of Domaine Pierre Morey and Maison Morey-Blanc. Michel took over from his father Roger Caillot. Unusually for modern Burgundy, he tends to wait a full 24 months before bottling, although he transfers the wine to tank after 12 months, so as to preserve freshness and avoid drying out or oxidizing the wine. His two Meursaults are very different in character. Clos de Cromin is located on the North side of the village, near the border with Volnay Santenots, just below the campground on a slope. Wines here are always on the rich side, and this is no exception with lots of weight and solid fruit and richness.

Puligny Montrachet   Chardonnay
Wow. This wine shows the really smoky notes we find so attractive in the higher end wines of Domaine LeFlaive. And then there''s a minerally character which is simply so different from California Chardonnay...one guest described this as showing the sort of flavors you might encounter from biting into an oyster shell. There''s nice weight to the wine...it''s substantial, but not heavy or ponderous. Delicious now, we suspect this wine will continue to grow over the next several years.

Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Nuits-St-Georges Pinot Noir
The wines are never pumped, fined or filtered. They are bottled by hand. Most of the wines are aged 100% in new barrels. Some of the denser, richer wines are aged in 200% new oak, which means they are transferred to a second set of new barrels during their élevage. The end result is an amazing set of exquisite wines with tremendous complexity, elegant, supple textures, fabulous purity of aroma and fruit flavor and unbelievable length.

2005 $67.99

Domaine Pierre Morey
  Meursault Les Tessons
ST88
Purer on the nose than the village wine, with an aroma of apple but also some alcohol showing. Fat and sweet but fresh, with rich flavors of apple, pear and flowers nicely framed by underlying minerality. This has the texture of a premier cru. Concentrated wine, a bit less warm on the end than on the nose. Morey is optimistic about this wine's aging potential.

2003 $67.99
18 Maison Louis Jadot
Maison Louis Jadot
  Nuits St. Georges Les Boudots
ST90
Good medium red. Red cherry, licorice and mineral aromas with a floral topnote. Round, supple and elegant, with a spicy character to the intense redcurrant and red cherry flavors. A juicy, classically styled midweight. Finishes with tangy, persistent flavors of bitter cherry, dark chocolate and spices.

2004 $67.99
19 Bouchard Pere & Fils
Bouchard Pere & Fils
Chateau de Beaune Vosne-Romanee Pinot Noir
Crimson colour with purple shades. Intense and refined bouquet developing flavours of flowers and very ripe black fruit. Round and well balanced to the palate, with present though noble tannins. A very nice wine.

20 Domaine Forey Pere et Fils
Domaine Forey Pere et Fils
Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Petits Monts Pinot Noir
WA91
Assembled from fourteen tiny parcels, the oldest planted in 1942 and the youngest debuting this vintage, Forey’s Vosne-Romanee displays a gorgeous nose of black cherry, cumin, iris, rowan berry, and sea spray. On the palate, sappy, bright, spice-tinged black cherry fruit makes for a lively impression, while creaminess of texture enhances the sense of richness. Polished and refined in finish. I would plan to enjoy this between 3-7 years of age.

2003 $70.99

Domaine de l'Arlot
Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots Pinot Noir
ST89
Good medium red. Pure aromas of red fruits lifted by spices and rose petal; less mocha and underbrush here than in the Nuits bottlings. A lovely fruity 2001 with enticing flavors of spicy red berries; more charming than the Clos des Forets Saint-Georges but with a bit less energy. Finishes with firm-edged tannins and very good length.

2001 $72.99
