Cascina Val Del Prete
  d'Alba Serra de Gatti Barbera
Cascina Val del Prete, or valley of the priest, takes its name from the exiled Bishop of Asti who lived there in 1850. In 1977 Bartolomeo Roagna and his wife Carolina bought the farm "Val del Prete" where they had worked as sharecroppers. The first thing they did was replace some grain and fruit with vines. The grapes are planted on south facing slopes in a splendid natural amphitheater. Over the years they have increased the area under vine. Their sons, Mario and Luigi, have entered the family business and take care of the vineyards. Cascina Val del Prete continues to be well received due to Mario’s commitment to great wine. Showing bright intense fruit, and loads of flavor, this Barbera is made from younger vines. It is an excellent value and it drinks well now. Drink with beef carpaccio, red wine braised meats, and chicken livers.

2 Movia
Movia
  Pinot Nero Pinot Noir
The Movia estate has been in existence since the year 1700. Even during the communist era, when it was nearly impossible to have a private company, Movia remained in the Kristancic family's hands. In fact, it was the only estate in all of the Collio of Slovenia to be in private hands. This estate has the best position in all of the Collio. The cellar is equipped with the latest technology and is organic and biodynamic, too. This Slovenian Pinot Nero offers loads of forest floor and woodland fruit aromatics along with food-friendly acid and a mushroom-inflected finish. Medium bodied.

23 Proprieta Sperino Uvaggio
Proprieta Sperino Uvaggio
Coste della Sesia Rosso Nebbiolo
The 2004 Uvaggio is composed of 75% nebbiolo (referred to in the local dialect as Spanna) with the remainder being vespolina and croatina. Uvaggio means a blend of grapes or what we in California would call a field blend (as opposed to the vinaggio which is a blend of finished wines). The 2004 Proprietà Sperino Uvaggio shows what careful grape selection, exacting vinification and moderate use of wood can produce. The wine is deeply colored with a lovely spicy scent. It is medium bodied and slightly firm now with characteristic nebbiolo flavors like rose petals and tar as well as substantial tannins and the typical nebbiolo mysteriousness. This wine will go well with all manner of roast and grilled meat as well as hard cheeses. This wine will continue to improve for many years.

2004 $34.99

It offers remarkable clarity and precision in a pure, focused style, with superb balance and finessed tannins. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2019.
