Artisan France Bronze

Artisan France Bronze

The concept of Terroir, which refers to the unique combination of natural factors associated with any particular vineyard is important to french vignerons. It includes such factors as soil, underlying rock, altitude, slope of hill or terrain, orientation toward the sun, and microclimate (typical rain, winds, humidity, temperature variations, etc.). Even in the same area, no two vineyards have exactly the same terroir, thus being the base of the Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) system that has been model for appellation and wine laws across the globe. In other words: when the same vareital is planted in different regions, it can produce wines that are significantly different from each other. In France the concept of terroir manifests itself most extremely in the Burgundy region. The amount of influence and the scope that falls under the description of terroir has been a controversial topic in the wine industry.

Domaine du Pesquier
Gigondas   Grenache Syrah
WA91
The 2005 Gigondas boasts a dense ruby/purple hue along with excellent ripeness, hints of crushed rocks, acacia flowers, blueberries, raspberries, and a distinctive earthy component. Medium to full-bodied with moderate tannin as well as good acidity, it should drink well for 10-12 years.

2005 $33.99
2 Domaine Calliot
Domaine Calliot
Meursault Clos du Cromin Chardonnay
Michel Caillot is the nephew of Pierre Morey, former winemaker at Domaine Leflaive, and now proprietor of Domaine Pierre Morey and Maison Morey-Blanc. Michel took over from his father Roger Caillot. Unusually for modern Burgundy, he tends to wait a full 24 months before bottling, although he transfers the wine to tank after 12 months, so as to preserve freshness and avoid drying out or oxidizing the wine. His two Meursaults are very different in character. Clos de Cromin is located on the North side of the village, near the border with Volnay Santenots, just below the campground on a slope. Wines here are always on the rich side, and this is no exception with lots of weight and solid fruit and richness.

2008 $44.99

Domaine du Vieux Lazaret
Chateau Neuf Du Pape Cuvee Exceptionelle
The greatest wine quiot has ever made in Robert Parker's opinion. Wine shows a dense reuby/purple color and a gorgeous nose of camphor, blackberry, kirsch, some roast beef and Provencal herbs. Full-bodied with great intensity, beautiful purity a mutil-dimensional mouthfeel, and a spectacular finish of close to a minute. Best now through 2020.

6 Domaine Zind-Humbrecht
Domaine Zind-Humbrecht
Muscat Goldert Grand Cru Muscat
Barely getting clear at this moment, this wine already shows a powerful nose, mixing minerality and stones with fresh exotic fruits. Not at all the classic Muscat nose. The palate is firm, and it is hard to believe this wine has 16g/l sweetness; such is the acidity present on the palate. Definitely a wine to age and let open. Should be delicious with spicy dishes.

2006 $50.00
7 Chateau de St. Cosme
Chateau de St. Cosme
Gigondas   Grenache Syrah
WS92
Packed with raspberry ganache, bittersweet cocoa, loam and briar notes, all pushed by a dark, muscular finish. Tangy minerality is buried deep on the finish, so cellar for maximum effect. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Best from 2010 through 2015. 3,165 cases made. –JM

Crozes Hermitage Le clos Syrah
WS91
The outstanding 2005 Crozes-Hermitage Le Clos is tannic, with tart acids, but impressive levels of extract, mostly cassis, licorice, olive, and spice box characteristics. It requires 3-4 years of cellaring, and should drink well for two decades.

2005 $52.99
9 Alain Graillot
Alain Graillot
Crozes-Hermitage   Syrah
WS92
A big, brawny style, with a loamy structure supporting the dark currant, tar, cocoa, and fig paste flavors. Long and muscular on the finish, this needs to stretch out a bit in the cellar, though the fleshiness makes it hard to resist now. Best from 2008 through 2012. 5,000 cases made.

2005 $53.00
10 Lucien & Andre Brunel
Lucien & Andre Brunel
Chateau Neuf du Pape Les Callioux Grenache Syrah

11 Chateau Le Boscq
Chateau Le Boscq
Saint-Estephe Cru Bourgeois Superieur Bordeaux Blend
WS89
Delivers blackberry, licorice and mineral aromas, with just a hint of coffee. Full-bodied, with a velvety texture and a decadent, earthy, very ripe fruit character on the palate. A bit rustic, but interesting. Best after 2010. 5,830 cases made. –JS

2005 $59.99

Puligny Montrachet   Chardonnay
Wow. This wine shows the really smoky notes we find so attractive in the higher end wines of Domaine LeFlaive. And then there''s a minerally character which is simply so different from California Chardonnay...one guest described this as showing the sort of flavors you might encounter from biting into an oyster shell. There''s nice weight to the wine...it''s substantial, but not heavy or ponderous. Delicious now, we suspect this wine will continue to grow over the next several years.

2005 $59.99

14 Chateau le Prieure Moueix
Chateau le Prieure Moueix
  St.-Emilion Bordeaux Blend
Fresh and floral, with a berry and tar undertone. Medium- to full-bodied, with fine tannins and a fresh, clean finish. There''s lovely fruit to this. Best after 2009.

2005 $60.99
15 Domaine Dujac
Domaine Dujac
Morey Saint-Denis   Pinot Noir
WS90
Full of fresh blackberry and plum notes, this firmly structured red is straightforward, gushing with ripe black fruit. The tannins are dominant on the finish, but what fruit. Needs time. Best from 2011 through 2024. –BS

2007 $67.99
16 Dominique Laurent
Dominique Laurent
Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Nuits-St-Georges Pinot Noir
The wines are never pumped, fined or filtered. They are bottled by hand. Most of the wines are aged 100% in new barrels. Some of the denser, richer wines are aged in 200% new oak, which means they are transferred to a second set of new barrels during their élevage. The end result is an amazing set of exquisite wines with tremendous complexity, elegant, supple textures, fabulous purity of aroma and fruit flavor and unbelievable length.

2005 $67.99
17 Domaine Zind-Humbrecht
Domaine Zind-Humbrecht
Riesling Clos Windsbuhl Riesling
The nose does warn you: be careful, this isn’t just another fruity easy Riesling style. It is packed with minerals, strong lees influence and it is almost possible to associate all those stony flavours with a raging acidity. The sugar maturity wasn’t high, so the wine appears elegant and delicate at first, but then the dry and racy character kicks in. This is great dry Riesling!

2006 $68.00
18
Robert Jasmin
Cote Rotie   Syrah
WA89
Deep ruby with notes of herbs, sweet kirsch, a hint of raspberry, and floral notes, this medium-bodied wine is very much in the Jasmin style, with supple tannins, an elegant, feminine, restrained personality, but excellent purity. It lacks somewhat in concentration, but that has never been one of the strong suits of the Jasmin wines. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.

2005 $69.99
19 Chateau Magdelaine
Chateau Magdelaine
Moueix   Cabernet Sauvignon
WA88
The dark ruby-colored 1999 Magdelaine is a stylish, light to medium-bodied effort. It possesses sweet, lush aromas and flavors redolent of cherries and currants. Subtle notions of earth, wood, and a touch of herbaceousness also emerge. Drink it over the next 10-15 years.

2005 $69.99
