Artisan California Bronze

Artisan California Bronze

Spanish missionaries moving north from Mexico spread not only the gospel but also the grape.  Right-minded Gold Rushers, the 49ers, established vineyards.  Italian immigrants were looking for a new life but what's life without wine.  They literally put down roots. Prohibition put the rapidly expanding vineyard plantings on hold.  With repeal planting revived with a clearer notion of where serious quality vineyards could thrive, Napa Valley.  In this way prohibition had been a real boost to winemaking in California.  A great deal of previously existing marginal vineyard was never replanted vastly improving the overall wine quality.

Napa Valley was the obvious spot for California to hang its viticultural hat but there is so much happening in other areas of the State that winelovers are bound to find decades of exciting new expressions in wine.

Cartlidge & Browne
California   Cabernet Sauvignon
WE82
The 2005 Cartlidge & Browne Cabernet Sauvignon is the product of some fourteen lots of wine from four growing regions: Lake County (34%), Paso Robles (49%), Sonoma County (11%), and Mendocino County (6%). Winemakers leaned a bit more on the warmer Paso Robles area for ripe fruit character, while Lake and Mendocino Counties provided fine spicy suggestions of tobacco and coffee, and the Sonoma components gave top notes of classic blackcurrant and cherry fruit.

Marimar Torres Estate
Russian River Valley Don Miguel Vineyard Roussanne Viognier
WS87
Sweet oak, milk chocolate and the barest suggestion of mint mingle with smells of ripe cherries in the attractive nose of this one, and, like the rest of its rather austere clan, it is a sterner and less-outgoing wine than expected once in the mouth. It fights against dryness and firm, acid-pushed tannins from mid-palate on, and it hangs onto just enough fruit to be counted a success. Allow it sit for a couple of years.

2003 $28.99

Bogle
California   Petite Sirah
WS82
First produced in 1978 by the Bogle family, this 2004 Petite Sirah is considered Bogle’s “heritage” varietal. On the nose, luscious boysenberry teases you along with touches of black pepper and herbs. Trademark inky and jammy tones fill the mouth with ripe fruit and berries. The voluptuous finish lingers with toasty oak and lush fruit. The firm tannins make this a wine that can develop for years to come, but you won’t want to wait that long to enjoy it! Try this unique wine with rich meat dishes of lamb, pork or game and their hearty sauces. Served Best With: Try this unique wine with rich meat dishes of lamb, pork or game and their hearty sauces. Walter Hansel Winery
Russian River Valley   Pinot Noir
ST88
Light red. Pungent cherry and spicy plum on the nose, with suggestions of tobacco, black cardamom, smoked meat and vanilla. Impressively complex for a regional offering, with spicy red and dark berry flavors brightened by zesty cracked pepper and orange peel. Finishes with lush, sweet dark berry flavors lifted by bright minerality.

5 Bernardus
Bernardus
Monterey County   Chardonnay
WE90
This uncomplicated, mild-mannered wine counts cleanliness and good balance as its principal virtues, yet it goes wanting for fruit beyond a slight smattering of candied apples and pears. It will likely pale if paired with richer foods, and it wants drinking with lighter springtime fare.

Chateau Julien
  Estate Merlot
Aromas of toffee, dark cherry and ripe berry extend through a subtle presence of cedar. This wine's medium-bodied palate and balanced acidity result in pure, intense flavors and depth. The touch of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon contribute texture, structure and a broad, full finish.

One-hundred percent Monterey County grapes from our Estate Vineyard were harvested for this flagship small production wine. The vineyard’s location in the southern Salinas Valley benefits from long warm days, a cooling ocean influence and long “hang time” on the vine. Vibrant fruit with intense varietal flavor and good acidity led to a September 6th harvest at 24.9 brix. Upon harvest, the grapes were crushed crushed and fermented on the skins for 9 days before aging in 50% new French Nevers oak barrels for 28 months. A small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes were ultimately blended with the Merlot.
2002 $29.60
15 Rombauer
Rombauer
Carneros Chardonnay Chardonnay
WS92
Rombauer Vineyards' 2007 Carneros Chardonnay is smooth, rich, and elegant, true to the Rombauer style. Apple, peach, and tropical fruit flavors weave together in a nice range of flavors that linger on the palate ending with a long, crisp, fruity aftertaste. The oak tones from both barrel fermentation and aging are nicely melded into the flavor and finish of the wine.

Chateau St. Jean
    Fumé Blanc
WS91
winemaker's notes: This Fume Blanc is Sauvignon Blanc blended with a small amount of Semillon and Viognier. The vineyards for this wine were selected from Knights Valley, Alexander Valley and Russian River Valley in Sonoma County. The fruit from these regions gives the wine the ripe melon, citrus and fig flavors to achieve a blend with a balance of fruit and herbal spice characters. "This lively and refreshing Fume Blanc offers bright aromas of grapefruit, melon and lemongrass. The Semillon contributes a hint of sweet red apple that combines with the vibrant citrus, fig and spice characters found on the palate, creating a beautifully balanced wine with a long, lingering finish." -Margo Van Staaveren, Winemaker

This wine opens with a very round beginning, followed by big cherry, blood orange and rose petal flavors that are underlined by a gentle acidity that keeps the overall impression delightfully fresh. Carneros   Chardonnay
Vibrant aromas of crème brûlée, ginger, lemon curd and white peach are followed by a creamy entry which blossoms to a full, sweet, peach, nectarine and citrus mid-palate. Medium-bodied with vibrant acidity, the wine finishes long and full. This Chardonnay is perfect with all types of seafood, fish, chicken and pork.

Buttery, oaky aromas, graced by a faint minerality, are preceded by golden brass colors. With nice palate weight it offers up flavors of lemon custard, hazelnut, spice and fig. Some citrus notes punch through on the finish, bringing on a pleasant note of acidity.

Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel Zinfandel
The grapes were picked at moderate sugar levels compared to other zinfandels on the market. This crop was picked at 23.0 brix which then soaked up to 24.5 brix, in the tank with a pH of 3.40. This process yielded a wine that is balanced and not excessive in ripeness and showcases typical berry fruit of a classic Dry Creek zin.
