Aging Italy 7-14 Year

Aging Italy 7-14 Year

The three greatest – and most age-worthy – Italian wines all start with the letter ‘B’: Brunello di Montalcino (from Tuscany), and Barolo and Barbaresco (both from Piemonte). Among these, the wine that is the most obvious choice for long-term aging is Barolo, which comes from the small region that surrounds the town of the same name in the highlands of northwestern Italy. Like Barolo, Barbaresco hails from a small eponymous region in Piemonte and is composed entirely of the Nebbiolo grape. Nebbiolo is a varietal that begs for patience due to its high levels of acidity and tannin. Although some Nebbiolos are made to be drunk young, the more complex and robust varieties like those from Barolo and Barbaresco are built for the long-haul. Drinking one soon after release can sometimes be a disappointing experience – the tannins are obtuse and unforgiving, the acid puckers the mouth, and the fruit flavors are uneven. But the passage of time resolves these conflicts, resulting in deep, rich, structured layers of candied orange, leather, earth, and red fruit. A good, well-aged Piemonte Nebbiolo is a truly unique experience in the wine world, one well worth pursuing.

1 Casanova di Neri
Casanova di Neri
Brunello di Montalcino   Brunello
WA93
The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino is fabulous in this vintage. Waves of dark fruit caress the palate as this juicy, delicious wine reveals its considerable charms. The fruit shows lovely weight and richness while maintaining an essentially mid-weight personality. Sweet scents of French oak linger on the round, caressing, impeccable finish. This is an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next decade-plus. The harvest took place from the 2nd to the 5th of October. The wine spent 24 days on the skins, after which it was racked into cask, where it spent 45 months prior to being bottled. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.

2006 $45.99
2 Piancornello
Piancornello
Brunello di Montalcino   Sangiovese
WA93
The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino is a huge, dark wine that saturates the palate with black cherries, licorice, new leather and French oak. Despite the extroverted style, this shows gorgeous delineation in its aromatics and plenty of vibrancy. Warm mocha and chocolate overtones add complexity on the finish. This is one of the more full-throttle wines of the vintage, and the extroverted personality of the wines from this part of the zone is quite evident, but all of the elements come together beautifully. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024." (05/11)

2006 $47.99
3 La Gerla
La Gerla
Brunello di Montalcino   Sangiovese Grosso
This floral- and cherry-scented red is elegant and supple, picking up a tobacco note on the palate. Moderate tannins emerge on the finish, where a spicy accent lingers. Best from 2013 through 2024. 3,000 cases made.

2006 $54.99
4 Fattoria di Felsina
Fattoria di Felsina
Fontalloro Rosso Sangiovese Sangiovese
ST96
"Good full red with a palish rim. Pure, superripe aromas of red cherry, violet, iodine and nutmeg. Superrich, highly concentrated and seamless, with densely packed flavors of raspberry, dark plum and marzipan. Finishes creamy-rich and explosively long, with a pretty violet note. This was so good I really had trouble letting the glass go. I''d wait a good five years on this one, then enjoy it for another two decades. Proof positive that sangiovese is one of the world''s great grape varieties."

2004 $58.99

7 Montevetrano
Montevetrano
Colli di Salerno IGT Cabernet Sauvignon
WA95
The 2004 Montevetrano is a knock-out. Endless layers of richly textured dark fruit flows from the glass as this gorgeous wine gradually reveals the depth of its expression. Tar, smoke, menthol, eucalyptus and earthiness emerge with air, adding further complexity as the wine sits in the glass. Gorgeously long and pure - with a finish that lasts forever- this sumptuous wine is not to be missed. Montevetrano is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 10% Aglianico. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2024.
