1 Rocca di Montegrossi
Rocca di Montegrossi
  Generia Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot
WA94
Layers of blue and black fruit, leather, spices and licorice are some of the nuances that flow across the palate in this voluptuous, striking wine. All of the elements come together seamlessly in the glass. This is another superb showing from Rocca di Montegrossi.

2007 $37.99
2 Mitolo
Mitolo
McLaren Vale G.A.M Shiraz
WA95
The 2006 Shiraz “G.A.M.” (the initials of the Mitolo children) was aged in French and American oak, 60% new. Opaque purple in color, it has an aromatic array of roasted coffee, violets, lavender, pepper, Asian spices, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. In the mouth it is velvety-textured, deep, concentrated, opulent, and altogether hedonistic. It will evolve for 5-7 years and drink well through 2026.

2006 $50.00
3 Chateau Lynch Bages
Chateau Lynch Bages
Pauillac   Cabernet, Merlot
WS92
Blackberry, licorice and mint aromas lead to a full-bodied palate, with velvety tannins and lots of blackberry and mineral fruit character. Shows outstanding concentration and balance. Best after 2014. –JS

2006 $72.99
4 Maison Benjamin Leroux
Maison Benjamin Leroux
Nuits Saint Georges Premier Cru Aux Thorey Pinot Noir
WA93
The 2009 Nuits St. George Aux Thorey bursts from the glass with an exciting array of dark fruit supported by firm yet polished tannins. Expressive aromatics are woven throughout, adding to the wine’s harmony, richness and sheer beauty. Tasted from tank. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029. —AG

2009 $79.99
5 Chateau Smith-Haut Lafitte
Chateau Smith-Haut Lafitte
  Pessac Leognan Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon
WA95
One can’t say enough about the accomplishments the Cathiards have achieved at this property since 1990. Prior to their purchase of the property, appallingly diluted, vegetal, fruitless, charmless wines were produced, but they have turned Smith-Haut-Lafitte into a showcase Pessac-Leognan. The inky/blue/purple-tinged 2005''s extraordinary nose reeks of charcoal, incense, scorched earth, abundant blackberry, blueberry, and cherry fruit, toast, and spice. Good acidity, huge but sweet tannin, and fabulous precision as well as definition characterize this full-bodied, super-concentrated effort. It should prove to be among the longest-lived wines yet made by the Cathiards. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030+.

2005 $89.99
6 Domaine du Pegau
Domaine du Pegau
Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reserve Syrah-Grenache-Clairette
WS89
Crisp and lively, with a mix of lemon, lime, white peach and green apple notes, followed by a blanched almond edge on the finish. Drink now. 250 cases made. –JM

2007 $94.99
7 Dominus Estate
Dominus Estate
Napa Valley   Cabernet Sauvignon
WA96
"There are 6,500 cases of the superb 2006 Dominus (91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot). Its dark plum/purple color is accompanied by aromas and flavors of truffles, forest floor, black cherries, black currants, and Asian spices. One of the finest wines of the vintage, it is complete, full-bodied, and seamlessly built with beautiful ripe tannins, low acidity, and a luscious, layered mouthfeel. The aromatics are even more evolved and complex than the 2005''s. The 2006 should drink well for 20-25 years. "

2006 $132.99
8 Chateau Leoville Barton
Chateau Leoville Barton
St.-Julien   Cabernet Blend
WA92
This is an impressively endowed vin de garde that should age effortlessly for 20-30 years. How Anthony Barton continues to fashion uncompromisingly primordial Bordeaux that are always among the biggest and densest of all the St.-Juliens is beyond me, but he does it year in and year out. Moreover, when it’s time to set the price, he appears to have the consumer foremost in his mind. The 2004 is a classic Leoville-Barton meant for long aging. Concentrated, with loads of smoke, creme de cassis, forest floor, and earthy notes emerge from this impressive, but oh, so backward wine. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030+.

2004 $139.99
9 Domaine Du Pegau
Domaine Du Pegau
Chateauneuf Du Pape Cuvee Laurence Shyraz
WS95
Really distinctive, with a gutsy, chewy frame supporting clove, blood orange, coffee, brick dust, macerated currant fruit, warm fig and hoisin sauce notes. The long, grippy finish has lots of mesquite, braised chestnut and spice notes. A classic throwback. Best from 2010 through 2030. 500 cases made. –JM

2004 $170.99
10 Aldo Conterno
Aldo Conterno
Barolo Riserva granbussia Nebbiolo
WS96
Very pretty plum and fresh flower aromas follow through to a full-bodied palate, with velvety tannins and a long, long finish. Layered and serious. Very close to the fabulous 1997. Best after 2009. 7,000 cases made.

2000 $257.00
11 Chateau Lynch Bages
Chateau Lynch Bages
Pauillac   Cabernet, Merlot
WA92
1988 or 1995-ish in style, rather than 1996, which seems to be the vintage several 2006s recall, this dense purple-colored wine displays sweet notes of creme de cassis, tobacco leaf, licorice, and some cedar and graphite. The wine has plenty of structure a la 1995 and a backward, muscular personality, but beautiful fruit on the attack and alluring purity and a nicely textured mouthfeel. The finish suggests cellaring for 3-5 years and drinking over the following two decades.

2006 $259.99
12
Louis Roederer
Cristal   Pinot Noir
A racy, crisp style, with apple, wheat beer and lemon notes. This tightens up, though the texture stays refined and silky. It's a bit lean and could use some time to flesh out and gain complexity. Best from 2010 through 2028. –BS

2002 $263.99
