Aging France 7-14 Year
Here’s a wine whose aging potential is entirely unknown to most wine drinkers. Good wine from Vouvray – a tiny region in France’s Loire Valley that grows almost exclusively chenin blanc – can be enjoyed young but takes on fascinating secondary and tertiary flavors with aging. Some of the best examples, particularly those made in the demi-sec (semi-sweet) and moelleux (sweet) styles, can improve for half a century or more. It’s worth emphasizing that Vouvray’s lack of notoriety makes it one of the very best bargains among age-worthy wine. To illustrate the point, the bottle we are laying down for 25 years (2005 François Pinon “Cuvée Tradition”) cost less than $20.

Cabernet, Merlot
An impressive effort from this Haut-Medoc property, the 2005 Belgrave possesses a deep ruby/purple color as well as notes of damp earth, cedar, herbs, black cherries, and currants, good acidity, moderately high tannin, an admirable, layered texture, and fine purity and overall balance. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2022.

Longueville

Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot
An undeniable star of the vintage, Pichon-Baron’s 2004 boasts an inky/ruby/purple color to the rim as well as a big, sweet nose of melted licorice, chocolate, black currant jam, truffles, and charcoal embers. Soft tannin, full body, and abundant opulence and flesh are atypical for the vintage character, but this wine is loaded. Pure, ripe, and evolved, it should be at its finest between 2009-2022.

Merlot Cabernet Franc
From a 41-acre vineyard situated on St.-Emilion’s limestone plateau, Beau-Sejour-Becot’s blend can vary, but it is approximately 70% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. Production can be as low as 4,000+ cases (in a tiny vintage such as 2003), or as high as 7,000+ cases (in an abundant year such as 2004). The 2003, which reminds me of a 1990 Right Bank Bordeaux, tips the scales at 13.5% alcohol. Its dark plum/ruby/purple color is followed by a sweet nose of creosote, scorched earth, black cherries, currants, and pain grille. Deep, full-flavored, muscular, textured, and rich with light to moderate tannin in the finish, this lavishly rich, full-bodied effort requires 1-3 years of bottle age, and should drink well over the following 12-15.

Cote Rotie

Syrah
Deep ruby with notes of herbs, sweet kirsch, a hint of raspberry, and floral notes, this medium-bodied wine is very much in the Jasmin style, with supple tannins, an elegant, feminine, restrained personality, but excellent purity. It lacks somewhat in concentration, but that has never been one of the strong suits of the Jasmin wines. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.
