Champagne USA

Champagne USA

Ahh sparkling wines. At the base of many a party, sparkling wines are seen as an indispensable celebratory ingredient. In recent years, however, the French original, Champagne, has become dauntingly expensive. Enter the U.S. alternative. At the very top end of the quality spectrum U.S. bubbly has become good enough to compete with mass market Champagne, and often at a fraction of the price. U.S. sparklers tend to be fruitier in flavor and feature less of the complex yeasty notes that characterize a high quality Champagne. The very best producers offer wines in the $20 range and even less, making them exceptional value when compared to comparable Champagnes

Scharffenberger Cellars
Mendocino County Brut Sparkling Wine Seyval Blanc
BH88
This foamy, moderately rich sparkler is in all ways defined by time on the yeast, and fruit becomes but a distant player in its display of cream and toast. Despite the obvious autolysis found in its makeup, it is always quite clean, very well-focused and free of excess. It is very dry without being in the least way austere, and, if a fine choice for aperitif drinking, it can also work as a no-risk companion to a wide range of milder seafood recipes. GOOD VALUE

2 Domaine Chandon
Domaine Chandon
Napa-Sonoma County Cuvee Brut Merlot
WS85
A good example of a mature sparkler, that has nutty and caramel flavors. The doughy character, with its yeasty finish, is attractive, but don't hold on to this, drink it now. Tasted in magnum.

  Rose Unoaked Pinot Noir

A serious pink wine, the richly layered ''06 Domaine Chandon Unoaked Pinot Noir Rose rounds itself out on the palate with excellent mouthfeel and drive; very flavorful!

Roederer Estate
Anderson Valley Brut Estate Chardonnay
BH91
70% Chardonnay; 30% Pinot Noir. Our first pick of the bunch among current crop of non-vintage brut bottlings, this intense, genuinely complex effort sports a lovely mix of toasty yeast and lemony fruit from its expansive aromas to its very long and very rich flavors. It is impeccably balanced, quite creamy in feel and is enlivened by an endless stream of tiny, pinpoint bubbles. And if all this were not enough, it comes with the very real bonus of being widely available. GOOD VALUE

Roederer Estate
Anderson Valley Brut Rose Chardonnay
BH90
60% Pinot Noir; 40% Chardonnay. From its comparatively light copper-salmon hue to its fairly forthright, cherry-like fruit, this creamy, nicely bubbled rendition steers more to a Blanc de Noirs style than to that of a Rose, and, while it conveys a fine sense of overall substance, it shows nary a trace of astringency. It picks up a slight edge of coarseness owing to its ample acidity, but it shows terrific palatal length and is bound to be smoothed by service with food.

$29.99
7 Domaine Chandon
Domaine Chandon
  Etoile Brut Cuvee Chardonnay
ST89
This very well-made wine seems to straddle the line between California fruitiness and the more complex yeast and mineral aspects of French Champagne. It leads with rich aromas of lemons, ginger, cream and lightly toasted nuts, and its briskly finished flavors confirm much of the same. Its mousse is light, yet fairly creamy, and only a bare bit of last-minute coarseness keeps it from higher award.

Argyle
Willamette Valley Brut Brut
WA90
Like the first flower of spring, an orchard full of 'nashi no hana' springs out of the glass. Aromas of grapefruit citrus-blossom, and fresh baked vanilla-caramel ladyfingers ride the pinpoint bubbles up into your senses. Prospero in a glass. The flavor is a parquetry of Nashi pear, citrus blossom honey with an extra juicy, creme puff center. The finish is long lasting and fresh fruited, while retaining an amazing mineral structure throughout. This is one of the most exciting sparkling wines made in Argyle's 20 years!

2002 $36.99

Schramsberg
Sonoma County Brut Blanc de Noirs Pinot Noir
WS88
Enticing aromas of lemon tart and raspberry lead to creamy, decadent baked pear, toasty spice and crème brûlée flavors. Drink now through 2014. 14,166 cases made. –TF

2006 $60.00
12 Domaine Carneros
Domaine Carneros
Carneros Le Reve Blanc de Blancs Chardonnay
ST94
Carneros. Once again, Le Reve emerges at the top of the ratings, and it is the wine''s impeccable adherence to the crisp, buoyant Blanc de Blancs style that puts it there. Its aromas offer a lovely mix of sweet citrus and creamy yeast components that combine both depth and appealing lightness, and they are followed on the palate by a perfectly appointed mousse and a refined set of rich, airy, pristinely fruity, stony, minerally flavors. Balanced and complex, deep and light at the same time, this one is about as good as it gets in Blanc de Blancs.

2004 $105.99
